I was just curious as to what types of long-acting insulin people are on, and what dosage they use per day? One shot a day? Multiple shots?

Well, I'm on a pump and I use Novolog and currently my basal amount is 34.53 units a day.

That includes factoring for carbohydrate in-take as well? That's quite good.

I'm currently on 21 units Lantus and back to trying 1 basal shot per day.

That does not include any carb intake. I use another 20 units on top of that for carb intake. And I even think my 34.53 is too high. I plan on making a bunch of changes to my treatment method come October 1st when I move out on my own and can get everything set to my lifestyle then.

34.53 is high? I am considered extremely resistant to insulin. I use 100 units of Levemir a day just for long-acting. :)

I'm taking Lantus...currently 20 units a day...once a day.
I use Humalog for meals, with a carb ratio, and it varies day to day. Somewhere between 10 and 20 units a day I would say.

I'm currently using 24 units of NPH per day.

My basal on my pump is currently 11.95 units of Humalog. I actually use a little less because I suspend the pump when I shower (miss about.3-.4 units for that) and I also set a temporary basal rate a lot in the afternoon when I go for a walk. I lose only .2-.3 units for that.

That is a very high basal dose for a type 1. From the other responses you can see the general trend. That amount of basal is usually only required in very large, type 2s. It might be that you are not a simple T1, but have other issues.
Also, most people seem to find that Levemir does not last 24 hours so two shots are required. (Lantus lasts somewhat longer, but many still get better results with two shots.)

What I meant by too high is that I drop slowly throughout the day if I don't eat anything. It's very slow, maybe 5-10 mg/dl an hour, but that's cause I haven't got the fine tuning perfected yet. I'm doing that in a few months when I make a huge lifestyle change. Kinda pointless to spend hours doing basal rate testing now and then to do it all over again in 2 months.

Actually, that is not high. A type 1 is suppose to use around 0.22 to 0.32 units of insulin per pound. I weight 193 lbs at 6 feet right now (hit my stump on weight loss, another lifestyle change coming up in 2 months.) Therefore I should use between 42.46 and 61.76 units of insulin a day. And your basal rate should be 40-60% of your TDD...which is 16.984 to 37.056 units per day(using the max range.) So being on 34.53 units per day I'm near the top range, and I said it's slightly high, maybe by about 2-3 units for the entire day. So really, I'm within range for everything.

Just went off my pump. Currently taking 13 units Levemir...7 units in the morning, 6 units 12 hours later. It seems to be working better than my pump did.

20-26u of Lantus once a day, depending on what I'm doing the next day or if I'm drinking that night.

Well, for my weight it is high, because I am quite skinny. But I am on a steroid and some other short term medications also. I assume it will go down in conjunction with some of the other medications running out, but we'll see. I'm still adjusting to the Levemir. My big obstacle at this point is that I can see to make the Levemir work throughout the day, but I am generally always waking up to a high. Shuffling the injection schedule has to find a solution.

Hi, I know what you mean. I was on 30 mg. of Prednisone a day
for RA, near the beginning of March. I was taking almost triple
the amount of Insulin I normally take and my sugars were still too
high for my liking. I eventually weaned myself down to 9 mg. which
is much better for my sugars, not so good for the pain more days
than not. Oh well....:dancing2:...that's Life. :)

I believe SueM said to take 2 units Insulin for every 1mg. of Prednisone.

I take 15 Levemir about an hour after dinner, and 1-2 units of Humalog per meal depending...P.s. on the subject of humalog, does anyone have a pen that uses half units? Cause, my body uses humalog very efficiently, so 1 unit= 3 carb choices (about 45-50 grams), and I'd really like to be able to eat odd number of carb choices :)
Cheers
