I overslept this morning and probably suffered the dawn phenomenon, but was late for work and didn't stop to test. I was feeling kind of icky because I have a cold, and at lunchtime my blood sugar was 11.1 mmol/l. I went home from work and went to bed because I was feeling even worse than I had earlier - chills, body aches, headache, etc. I slept for a couple of hours and tested my blood sugar again - this time it had gone down to 8.6 mmol/l. I went back to bed and didn't eat anything.

A few hours later, my bg had gone up to 12 mmol/l and I took my evening shot of Regular and NPH. An hour after that, my bg had gone up to 13 mmol/l and I'm getting scared to test it again in case it keeps going up!

Anyone have any idea why my sugar went down and is now going up even though I haven't eaten anything?

mmol/l is the measurement used in Canada, Europe and most Commonwealth countries to measure blood sugar. It is completely 'regular.'

Rainbow,

Have you checked for ketones? When I was in the hospital a week and a half ago for being so high they explained to me once you have ketones you need to take a lot more insulin. For example, when I am 300, which is around 16-17mmol/l, I take only 3units. However, when I have ketones my doctor told me to take 10-15 units. Ketones build up a resistance to insulin so be sure to drink lots of water to flush them out and perhaps you need extra insulin. Or when sick I know my blood sugars run higher than usual.

Ketones never occurred to me. My BG meter reminds me every time my BG gets too high that I should check for ketones. I need to get some dipsticks or whatever it is they use these days to check for ketones. Thanks for the reminder.

My sugar is more normal today. A little on the high side, but only up to 8 mmol/l (approx 144).

ohhh ...mmol is like the metric system or something...i didnt mean to insult by saying its not regular...its just like a foreign language to me....hee hee im sowwy!!!

my blood sugars are crazier than me sometimes...when i have ketones...i drink like gallons and gallons of water...that makes it go away real fast...the more water you drink during ketones the better...you can pick up ketone sticks at your local pharmacy...they are pretty cheap!!

You could have been fighting something also. Its completly normal when getting a cold for your sugars to go hi even without food. Infections can do the same thing. I dont get sick very often but I can allways tell when im getting a cold because my sugars go high way more then my normal range even with totally following my eating plan and using the same insulin levels.Take care RUBBER DOWN Wedge.
