View Full Version : Bored with same old snacks

Does anyone have any new suggestions for snacks? I'm getting bored with what I've been doing - veggies and dip or guacamole, a little piece of fruit, beef or pork jerky, spicy cheese popcorn. I'm even tired of cheese and crackers (I found that 4 Keebler Club Crackers have only 9 grams!).
Need some new ideas....
What I'd really kill for is a big bag of corn chips and a bowl of guac but I'll behave and stick to the right stuff. :boring:

You could always have a small bag of chips and some guacamole. The avocados are nearly carb free.
I eat alot of nuts. The lowest in carbs that I've found are Macadamia nuts and almonds.

Nuts are yummy but I want to watch the fat too. I just dropped 20 lbs...want to keep it off and lose another 20 if I can. I've done guacamole with cucumber chips and it's good..I suppose a handful of corn chips wouldn't kill me now and then. I LOVE guac

You'll put on weight very quickly after diagnosis. You'll have lost a lot of weight from DKA and your body will put it straight back on, and you'll start retaining water better.
I'd ignore the advice about eating lots of carbs though - that won't do you any favours at all. Just eat a normal diet.

as it happens... my normal diet does actualy mean lots of carbs... i have always eaten lots of pasta, rice, potatos (jacket!) and fruit.
It's when i eat the fat and protein now that ruins my levels.
I have a naturally fast motabolism as well so ill still be fairly slim, but i am hoping i can put some weight on and just look normal! I've always been a rake :)

You could have baked chips... they have carbs, but they are low in fat and pretty tasty :eating:

How about small amounts of fruits?
1 1/2 cups of watermellon is 15 carbs.
12 cherries, 3/4 cup of pineapple, small orange, small peach.........in fact, I was taught that an amount of fruit, roughly the size of your fist = 15 carbs.

or you can eat smoked salmon straight out of the packet! It's tastey... low in carbs and good for your brain! lol

I bought a package of the low carb burrito wraps other day. I smear one good with fat free cream cheese and then a spoonfull or two of strawberry or apricot sugar free fruit spread, roll that sucker up and then....... wonder where it went when it's all gone in a couple bites. :hmmmm2:

I'm a total sucker for sugar free jello, sugar- free chocolate pudding (watch the brands...some have more carbs than others) and low carb yogurt. Dannon makes a low-carb yogurt that is only 3 grams of carbs, sweetened with splenda. Great stuff on a hot day!

Air (or microwave) popped pocorn with some seasonings. I have a Presto microwave popper that you don't have to add any oil to. I usually put the kernels in, spray them quickly with an olive oil mister, sprinkle a little salt and then let it pop.
My sister just told me that she found little sugar free/fat free chocolate meringues, sweetend with Splenda. She's not diabetic, though, just watching her weight! I forget how many carbs she said they had but it was very few per serving.
I actually like Egg Beaters with some salsa for a snack.

OOOOhhhhh...meringues with Splenda? I have to find those!! Popcorn is good but I think I've overdone it on the popcorn already. I can't stand aspertame so the jellos and puddings and jelly and jam are out.
I do often go for the "handful" of fruit for 15 grams (as a rule) but as much as I love fruit even I'm getting a little tired of it all the time.

Macadamian and Almond nuts are among some of the pure healthiest foods you can eat in terms of cardiovascular care.

Read those labels! More and more companies are starting to use splenda instead of aspertame.....I avoid the stuff it at all possible, so I'm always on the hunt.

I spent 2 years being low carb and diabetic snack queen. I wanted flavor and did not want to pay for it. I invented, copied, madeover recipes and even did intence jello and cream cheese and coffee experiments to make deserts that were worthy of my pre diabetic taste buds. They are out there, and there is no reason to pass on flavor no matter what you are on low carb or diabetic. Boring food causes people to stray from their programs.
1. Stuff celery with peanut butter
2. put veggie cream cheese on a carrot slice or any flavor
3.chive cream cheese dried beef on a cracker
4. All sorts of slaws make great snacks, use small amts of dried berries or fruit to perk them up.

In another posting someone recommended the South Beach High Protein Cereal Bars in peanut butter flavor and one in chocolate flavor. Both are very tasty and 140 calories, 15 carbs, 10 grams protein and low in fat. Also I like the SnackAway twinkie type cake and the oatmeal cakes. The oatmeal cakes are like the Little Debbie cakes but low in fat and sugar or sugar alcohols. They are higher in carbs, like 31 a cake, so I open one and nibble on it throughout the day. I love the list of foods Brenda gave so I'm on the hunt for several items she mentioned. Also, the mention of almonds and mac nuts works for me. I snack on those throughout the day too. I tend to be a snacker with dinner as my main meal but work on keeping my snack foods healthy but flavorful. I eat lots of peanut butter since it goes well with lots of foods, celery, crackers, bananas, etc. Hope this is not bolded since I hit that key in error, if so, please ignore it.

Most items can be found at WalMart. Mrs. Mays has about 8 or so different nut snacks, all are great.
The BBQ cups you make by browning ground meat, then mixing in BBq sauce sugar free or any other, you can add a little relish if you like and line a mini muffin pan with eggroll wrappers put a spoon of mixture in and top with some cheese and bake 350 until wrappers are crisp. you can freeze and reheat if you like or if you live alone.
The pitas snacks are pita split open to make 2 thin round halves, brush with olive oil and spread pesto ( jar type) over each, add a little parmesan if you like cut with pizza cutter or knife into triangles and bake at 375 until crisp like chips.
The flan is in Adkins cook book along with the cheesecake recipe. The oddesey protein bars are harder to find, but worth the look. The jellos just use SF and add snapple SF flavored tea instead of water. They have 30g P.

We have Sun Harvest whole foods stores in Texas. They have Almonds that are coated with Sugar free Choc, mocha, yogurt etc. The cappuccino are my favorite. They are sold in bulk so I mix them up. I drink Carb-wise Hills Bros Cappuccino it is sweetened with splenda. I love any coffee flavor snack item!

Of course the carb amount counts. Try eating as much fruit as you want and see what happens with your bg. Moderation. And truly go light on the fruit cause it has lots of sugar.
As far as a snack, how about cheese puffs that you make from sliced cheese? Put sliced cheese on wax paper in microwave and zap until puffy. They will deflate and then you will have a kind of crunchy cheese thingy. Like a cracker almost...well, more like a cheesey bread. Very good with toppings of your choice.

The girls I work with and myself were desperate for snacks that weren't so fattning and of course low carbs. We took flour tortilla shellls, mixed "lite" cool whip with strawberry flavored cream cheese together (making it kind of fluffy) and spread it over the tortilla shell. Then rolled it up and ate it up! It was really very good! (the corn tortilla shells have less carbs, but I didn't like them as well as the flour)

My current list of snacks (I am usually pairing a carb with protein):
Blue Bunny Yogurt (if available in your area - it is sweetened with Splenda)
Snack pack of cottage cheese with a small can of diced peaches, drained(I get these individual serving cans of peaches/mixed fruit in bulk at Costco)
South Beach Diet High Protein Peanut Butter Bars - if I want less carbs and more protein, I cut them in half, put the half in a ziploc and add an ounce of peanuts and keep these in my purse or lunch bag for emergencies.
Blue Tortilla chips and melted cheese of choice for dipping- I have used velvetta or any other than has some protein, watch out for those really fake cheeses
Half a peanut butter sandwich with low carb fruit spread of choice
Apple or pear slices with peanut or sunflower butter spread
1/2 pumpernickel roll with pesto sauce and mozerrella cheese melted on top
Cheese toast - an old standby, slice of cheese broiled on bread
For a treat, I use 1/2 the sugar free pudding in an individual serving and put a tablespoon or two of Dream Whip on top, mixing the two up. Really improves the taste & low in carbs
I know I have more, but that's all I can think of right now.....
