I am wondering what the contents of a sugar alcohol are? Do they typically raise/lower BS? I have bought some sugar-free, carb-conscious popsicles for a snack and they contain sugar alcohol in replacing some of the sugar.
Are these sorts of alcohols generally like beer in that they tend to lower blood sugar levels?
I know the kinds of alcohols are different. Wondering if they react the same, if anyone has tried anything with this. :)

This (http://www.mendosa.com/netcarbs.htm) might be of help.

I gave up eating low-carb ice cream becuase of the sugar alcohols. They mess with my bg real bad and I can't figure out how to bolus for them. Now, I simply eat the real stuff, in moderation of course. :star:

I can have a couple of pieces of hard candy with sugar alcohols and that's it. For everything else I buy the real thing, or something with the artificial sweeteners. Sugar alcohols supposedly take a long time to metabolize and therefore don't spike your BG, but for many people (like myself) I do see a quick spike from them.
The best way to find out if they work for you is to test your BG a lot after consuming them. Oh, and make sure you're near a bathroom if you have too much.

The press on sugar alcohols says they have a limited impact on blood sugar. In my case, that was correct. What didn't get strong enough mention was the laxative effect.
I may be highly sensitive, but I found that I could scrupulously stick to suggested serving sizes or even eat less than the suggested amount and still have a problem. I now try to avoid sugar alcohols entirely.

You and me both, brother. I just have to smell the stuff and I'm basically looking like -->:toilet:
If I read that a product has more than 3 grams of sugar alcohols, I put it back. I read one package the other day, some sugar-free licorice I think, and it had 18 grams of sugar alcohol. I figured I could have bought it, stabbed myself in the colon, and threw it down the toilet for the same effect.
Sorbitol, manitol, mallitol, erythritol -- I do not TOLerate any of those tols!
I can eat Edy's sugar-free ice cream if I eat a 4 oz portion, and can eat a few of the Hood new sugar-free Pop Stix popsicles -- but otherwise I avoid sugar alcohols like the plague.

Strange. I tried some sugar free popsicles that had sugar alcohol, I don't have the laxative effect or the stomach pains.

Consider yourself blessed. Literally, within half an hour of ingesting sugar alcohols, I need a toilet. And I mean there is no option, there had better be one close and accessible.

Amen to what Duck said.
Some of us are more sensitive than others to sugar alcohols. If you are not sure how your system handles them, try to avoid products listing large numbers of grams. Also, avoid like the plague any product using sugar alcohols that has been warmed. For example: A candy bar that got left in a hot car for awhile.
Cracker Barrel used to offer "sugar free" pancake syrup in their restaurant. They brought it in a small bottle that had been in a warmer. I didn't know better and ate some, believe me. . . I learned better very very quickly.

Sugar alcohols don't have the laxative effect on me, nor do they contribute to wavering bs levels. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones too. :D

I wish they went through me that quickly. First, I have a day of intense stomach pain and then I need a toilet. It's horrible!

Oh, I never said I don't get gut-wrenching pains. :-
BTW, the last time I experienced this was after I took the liquid form of the Tylenol Sore Throat (the liquid). NO WHERE did it say on the bottle that sugar alcohols were used. I take a hit of this stuff, saunter back to my hotel room...get bent over in pain as I wait for room service to bring me food. I distinctly remember thinking as I was taking my food from the guy that I was wishing he would talk faster...because I had to GO!

I had an interview like that once; wasn't feeling well...had to go. I didn't even want the job. Boy, did that feel like a LONG conversation!
