Hi All :)
This past weekend, my husband and I took a long weekend off from work. Well, on one of the days, we went to the lake swimming for the day. It was so much fun! Well, as normal, I detached my pump, and I never use one of those little protecter thingers that usually come with the infusion sets (I use the quickset. I know most sets come with the little thing you put on the set when the tubing is detached). Well, we played pretty hard in the lake, and when we got out, we were all full of sand.
When we got back to the car eventually, I tried to reattach my set. It wouldn't go on. I tried again, and still no luck. So, I took a closer look, and it seemed that sand had gotten caught in the itty-bitty crevices where my pump is supposed to click into place. And, it was in a spot where I really could not get the sand back out again. I ended up having to change out my whole set because once I finally got my set attached again, my bg's spiked and also I could not get the thing to detach again. :stickyman
Moral of the story is as follows: Use those little protecter thingers that come with your infusion set. I have learned the hard way, and will now be using one of those regularly. I guess that I just never thought that those little crevices were big enough for anything to get in there, but I stand corrected.:albertein
Anyways, just thought I would share just in case anyone else has been through a similar situation. Thanks for listening!:dancing:

And I've had the exact opposite happen! :bath: Also using a quickset, I did put that protection thingy on and when I got out of the water, it wouldn't come off. It felt kind of like the pressure from inside when you're trying to open a jar. It seemed like water (steam?) created a sort of film on the inside. The whole set would twist, but the thingy just would not click off. I also ended up having to change the set. So now I never use the thingy any more.
 Will the next person reading this please remind us what the thingy's called? :dontknow:

You won't ever catch me playing in the sand. I can't stand the way sand feels and I cringe to even think about it touching my body. Call me weird!!
I'd like to know if anyone has ever felt the cannula actually moving when trying to reconnect? I felt it move the other day when i reconnected and it was a bit painful but my BG's were fine the remaining life of the set.

I use the protective cover when I go into my hot tub and swimming pool. I also used it when I went to Florida on vacation and we spent a few days at the beach.

I've gotten soap stuck in mine, so I try to remember to use the cap for showers.

I don't use a protective cap when showering, but like Spike, I have gotten some soap stuck in mine.

I don't too well at remembering the caps. I doubt I'd give myself more than 25% "compliance". <g>

My husband worries about infection so he always uses the 'thingy'

At least you can claim some compliance. ;) I never use those things.

I had been told at my pump training back in the day that the thinger was optional for usage. So, I have always decided not to because I am terrible at keeping track of little small thingers. Maybe I will just use it when I go to a beach where there is a ton of sand.....lol I just get really mad when I have to waste a set.

I always use the cap thingy for showers (similar soap clogging issues), when swimming, and during "other" activities.

I always use them to help prevent infection. Remember, that canula that the cap helps to protect is an opening into the body. And just like a cut, it can get infected alot easier. So I prefer to place safe and always use them.

I have never used the cap thingy in the five years I have been on the pump. I have had my canula not want to re-attach on occassion. I guess I need to think about using the thingy. LOL

I've never used them either... and I haven' t had a problem (yet). I hate throwing them away, it's kind of wasteful, but I just don't need them :dontknow:.
