I started Lantus about 3 months ago, and it was the best thing.
With little effort, my sugars stayed at around 6 mmol/l ALL the time. It was like a fantasy.

I'm still on it, and I still eat the same breakfast EVERY single morning, requiring me to use about 6-7 units of Novorapid (Novolog) to keep me at my 6-7 mmol/l range.

Over the last month or so, I have noticed that my Lantus (which i take at bedtime) is taking me for a little dip around 3-4 mmol/l at around 4am. I am on 16 units right now.

I'll wake up wth a 6.5-8.0 sugar, take 14 units in my abdomen (haven't changed injection sites) and when I get to work 20 mins later, my sugar is at like 18 mmol/l ?!?!!?!?!

What is causing this SURGE?! I used to cover this breakfast with a modest 6-7 units of Novorapid and still be at like 6 mmol/l when i get to work.

It's so frustrating.
I eat the EXACT same breakfast that I still eat each morning (2 yogurts and a granola bar and coffee).

Why would this happen? Nothing drastic has changed. I still do cardiovascular exercise, and occasionally weight train at the gym during the week (evenings).

I am at a total loss as to how or why this is happening, and it is killing me at work...

Just when you think diabetes can be frustrating, you have stuff like this happen and you are just over the top frustrated.

If anyone can offer any input or notes on their experiences like this, I would love to hear from you.

Yes I have:

- Ruled out bad Novorapid by trying new bottles
- Ruled out the Lantus by getting a new bottle
- Keep my lantus refridgerated
- don't keep the Novorapid (in my novolin pen) refridgerated

thanks,

Hi kemist.

First of all, I find that sometimes my carb ratios and insulin dosing needs change all of a sudden for no reason. It just happens, and it seems like once I get everything adjusted it all just snaps back into the original place again.

If you're having lows at nite, then you may need a snack before bedtime. It'll take some trial and error to figure out what you need, but ck your b/s before bedtime and then again around 3ish a.m. Depending on what your b/s level is before bed you may need a snack, I've seen some people need just a bit of protein, and some w/ protien and carbs, depending on bedtime b/s.

I have ended up on 2 shots of Lantus a day, because my b4 lunch and dinner sugars would be in the 200's regularly on just one. Doesn't sound like that's a problem you're having though.

Hope maybe some of my suggestions help,
HeatherP

kemist,
I too use Lantus and Novolog/novorapid.

To head off any Lantus lows, I eat something before going to bed. I keep the snack in the 12-22 Carb range and wake up BG reading is generally 85/4.7-95/5.2.

I'm not sure I understand.
1. Are you saying that you've had to up the amount of Novorapid to cover breakfast?
2. How much time has expired between injection and BG test that gives you a reading of 18? In your statement it reads as if you've not waited 2 hours before checking your BG.

Sorry I'm so dense.

Yeah, I'm doing ok with the nighttime adjustments to make sure I don't get too low during the night,

It's the tripling of my dose in the morning (with the same breakfast every morning) that has me frustrated.

It was great to be on 6 units for breakfast with 16-18 units of lantus in me taken the night before. Why would my need for Novorapid increase triplefold ??

It's as if my body just decides to change its sensitivity to insulin sometimes, perhaps months at a time..

Frustrating.

thanks for your comments so far everyone.

Kemist, I've run the range between a 1:18 ratio to 1:6 in the mornings. It just changes sometimes.

1. I've been using around 6-7 units to cover this same breakfast meal when i first started lantus for the first few months. Now over the last 3-4 weeks, it has to be triple the dose otherwise i end up 16-20 mmol/l.

2. about 1.5 hours-2 hours. It's as if I didn't even take my morning insulin...

One of the things that frightened me about Diabetes:

After being diagnosed, but before I had received the proper training, I was frantically hunting for any information I could find. On some board there was a post by a fellow who had been able to include certain foods after having them wreck his b/s readings for, as I recall, 12 years..........all of a sudden, it was if his body was changing on him and accepting some things and not others.

I was thinking, "Holy, ****. How am I going to be able to protect my health and do right by my family if I don't know what I can and can't eat at any given time."

But when I stopped and thought about it carefully, I realized that I do this all the time now, I just didn't make a big deal about it. I had always accepted the notion that things would change.

I have always loved onions, but as I got older I couldn't eat as many as before. I used to eat bowls of ham and beans with cornbread---not no more. And on and on and on.

The point being that those of us with Diabetes have to do the same thing, it's just that we have devices that let know about these changes faster than "regular" people. Plus, we have to be more aware of the changes because they effect whether we live or not. So it's kind of more important.

I eat the EXACT same breakfast that I still eat each morning (2 yogurts and a granola bar and coffee).

It just means that, for some unknown reason, Cosmic Humour perhaps, something on that list isn't acceptable any more. Try replacing one of those things with something else and see what happens. Don't go "whole hog" and change it all. Just one thing at a time and you'll then know, perhaps, a whole class of foods that you should avoid for breakfast.

Who knows, maybe you can even eat whatever it is later in the day with no problems.

Sorry to be so long-winded.
