I went to a walkin clinic today... i was hoping to get an a1c ordered...
the doctor didn't order it for me and went on to say that my symptoms are a complete exageration and the sugars in the high 7's, 8's and 9's are completly normal...he said the only time anyone should worry is if these numbers are fasting numbers....
he actually laughed at me on more than one occasion....

does anyone know what causes sugars to rise in the night three times recently i woke up in the middle of the night to sugars of 7.4 8.8 and 10.2

any comments or advise would be appreciated

An A1C would paint the rest of the complete picture. You could be running low at night quite often and then your liver is kicking in with dumping glucose to counteract the low. It may be working too well and causing you to run high. This is sometimes known as the Somogyi Effect.

From http://www.diabetic-talk.org/dp.htm

SOMOGYI EFFECT

Somogyi Effect, named for Dr. Robert Somogyi, its discoverer, is a high morning BG due to a low overnight. It is most commonly seen with insulin using diabetics, but is also seen with overnight reactive hypoglycemics.

The mechanism is a low overnight, which causes the body to react by releasing many of the same hormones seen in DP. The strongest blood glucose increasing hormone, glucagon, plays an important role. It tells your liver to start glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis to provide enough glucose for your body to survive. This is sometimes referred to as a Liver Dump. Often, this mechanism over-produces, and you wake to a significantly higher BG.

Setting your bedtime BG target a bit higher, will usually prevent you from having a hypoglycemic event overnight.

Without an A1C it's really hard to say exactly what is all happening though. What have your fasting BGs been? Sugars in the 7s, 8s, 9s, are not normal unless they are within an hour, sometimes two, after eating.

anywere from 1.5 hours to 2 hours after eating my sugars are in the high 7's
i eat small meals often so by the time its time for a snack my sugars have not gone back down enough thus landing in the high 8's

if i wait too long to have a snack i get really tired and yawn so much i get short of breath, i get shaky and irritated.....

i have to say that my sugars are always in the 7 or 8s, because i eat small things often. I don't really understand this though because i don't eat anything sweet my snacks ususally consist of rice cakes or friut(due to allergies i can't eat many snack foods) some fruits make me feel even worse (melons for example) this is the main reason that i think these sugars are to high for me.... my family are really big on sweets i've seen my sister eat a chocolate bar big enough for 3 people and her sugar was 5.8 i ate a small piece and i woke up in the middle of the night shaking, palpitations, blurred vision, freezing cold but hot at the same time....

i just don't understand all i want is to feel good thats all....

the doctor i saw today mentioned reactive hypoglycemia and said the only way to treat is by eating 6 small meals a day... i've tried that it didn't do the trick....
i'm sick of waking up in the morning feeling like i've been run over...
as for fasting sugars they are normal 4.3 to 5.8

so i'm running out of ideas and options

sorry for the rant

Cinnabon is with Cin's advise!!! What a nut.
I really dont have patience for minds like those:hmpf: !!

Will he bewilling to help you out 150% if these high A1C cause damage?
I really wish nothing bad, but having a doctor that at least motivates you to try and reach a good A1C, would be ideal, NOT LAUGH!

Sorry you are having such a time now. Feeling like you've been run over by a mac truck is no fun. And being laughed at is even worse. When we have the big D we have to feel like we can talk to the doc. I would run, not walk to another doctor, and then I'd make sure that this one knows why. Noone else should have to put up with such insensitivity either.

Good luck figuring out what's going on. Jedi had a great explanation of the Somogi (I can't even spell it) effect. He is a super reliable source.

My advice: switch doctors. The sooner, the better.
High bg's at night: do a Google search on "dawn phenomenon", if by middle of the night, you mean after 3AM. Otherwise, if it's midnight you are talking about, maybe it's late evening snacking, too much fat in diet, etc, etc. (I don't even know if you are on meds, so my comments are just conjecture.)

I agree with the others... switch to a different doctor, if at all possible! If a physician isn't willing to order a test that *I* want done, I fire that doctor immediately...

If I hadn't done that with one doctor we used to have for the kids, I'd probably not have one of my kids right now!

hey everyone!
thank-you so much for all your responses!!! it is so discouraging when you speak so someone especially a professional and they laugh at you

i am in the process of looking for a new doctor.... finding a good one is not easy... i have an appt with a new endo on october 2nd i was just hoping i wouldn't have to wait that long... but no such luck....i've been waiting to see the guy since the begining of march... he better be good.....

to answer some of your questions... its generally between midnight and 3 that i wake up with these sugar problems.... i either wake up with the shakes, blurred vision, cold/hot, palpitations, shortness of breathe the whole bit or i feel strange and its high.... i usually have a snack between 930 and 10pm trying to put my sugar up a bit to avoid the lows during the night, out of a sleep they really scare me....

how common if at all is shortness of breath with sugar levels fluctuating... i have shortness of breath quite often im not sure if there is a link....

during most of these sugar attacks my sugars are not really low this happens when they are anywere between 4 and 5.3... is this even possible... the only thing i know for sure is juice or milk stops it....thats why i'm assuming i am having a low

If you've been running high frequently then you can sometimes get low symptoms when your blood sugar is normal. If this is the case then the way to stop it is to get your sugars normal most of the time, and stop treating symptoms when you are in the normal range (if you think you are going to drop more and/or have symptoms and can't test, then of course treat).

Good luck finding a new doctor. I have an endo who really isn't as agressive as I'd like, too, and tends to brush off my concerns. I'm just too lazy to go find a new doctor at the moment, so I just ignore what he says and do my own thing (and my own research to find solutions to things he doesn't think is a problem).
