Hi guys, I am not a diabetic but my mom is and i'm very concerned about her health, she's currently 45 and has Type 2, she's not on any medications but has kept her blood glucose level very well under the charts ever since she discovered she has diabetes. until the recent past few days, where every night when she measures her blood glucose level 3 hours after dinner, it's always around 190, usually its around 110/120, she's been eating the same thing every night for dinner , consisting of Yellow corn flour porridge, and veggies such as tomatoes and beans and cucumbers(pretty healthy right?), would you guys know why the sudden rise in BG level? she's also on her period these days , could that be why? i heard that might have something to do with it.
thank you guys

Sorry to say, diabetes is a progressive disease. What works for one day, might not work the next. The BG numbers you report are not that bad, but are already in the range where damage to the body can occur. Your Mom needs to see a doctor and get blood work done. It is very possible that medication is needed.

Stress can raise my BG, sometimes for just 1 reading .... and sometimes for a day or 2. If diet/excercise patterns are held constant .... you probably have to assume that the liver is producing more glucose at this time.
I wouldn't worry about a rise over a few days, but with longer term readings, you'll be able to see if it's a periodic problem, so to speak.

Don't even start me on THOSE days. :girl:
Yes, it very possibly could be hormonal. As a type 1 I sometimes just give up on control for a day or two every few months because it gets frustrating and type 2s are thrown off balance even more by all kinds of hormones.
But as always with diabetes it could be something completely different, so I'd test and test and test and see a dr in the near future - nothing urgent, just to make sure.

IMO you should look at what she is eating. Corn is a very fast acting carb, tomato is not a veggie, it is a fruit. Also high in sugars. Beans are a your mileage may vary item. I really can't eat them, not a fast carb, but a carb, for me that brings my bg up over a long period.
Diabetes is a changeable beast. So what may have worked in the past may not work now. As a member said earlier, continue to test, test, test. Trust the meter to tell you if you can eat something. Perhaps she should try a little lower carb meal in the evening.
Her period may also contribute to the rise. After all there are additional hormones running around. Perhaps you could consider keeping a spread sheet with her bg numbers fasting, before meal, 1 hr after meal, 2 hr after meal, and upon rising in a.m. Over 2 weeks this would give you a very good idea of what different foods are doing to her bg.
I would argue that tomatos (tomatoes?) are NOT high carb; a large tomato, 3 inches in diameter, has a total of 7.1 grams of carbohydrate, some of that being fiber. YMMV, but I can eat a whole tomato with no rise in blood sugar (therefore, I do not use them to treat mild lows, either).
If you rule out all other issues as to why her sugars are increasing, I read elsewhere that what some Type 2's do to keep their sugars lower during sleep is they take a shot...of gin. Or Whiskey. Something to consider. :-

Keep in mind also that protein contributes to bg, not just carbs... :stupido2:

I have learned that Corn is a Grain and Graing will turn into Glucose 100%. But a table spoon of Organic Sugar will translate into only 50% Glucose. Potatoes are a big culprit they turn into 100% Glucose very fast.
So Grains are high on the GI Scale. Glycemic Index. Probably wrong spelling.
They say some whole unbleached grain are a little better than others that take longer to digest. I heard a Doctor say (Joseph Mercola) say that our bodies were not ment to eat all these carbs.
If your Mom could stay off of the Corn Meal Mush Polenta she wouldn't notice the great spike in her BG.
I'm seriously thinking about eliminating most Grains and Regular Potatoes out of my Diet. I seem to need only half of the amount of insulin when I do.
Anyone here study the Glycemic Index of foods here?

That could explain it. Some women go high during their period, some go low. Some have no change whatsoever. I would see if it changes once her period is over with. If that turns out to be the culprit, she should talk to her doctor. They may be able to suggest some changes she can make during that week to correct the problem.
