Hi

I have just had back my HBA1C from January (!) and the figure was 5.8, unfortunately it means nothing to me, my doc said it was OK.

Can anyone give me idea how that is in general? My morning figures are usuallly around 8.0-8.5 which I understood to be a bit too high,

I am confused again. :hmmmm2:

Thanks
Andy

Depending on where you look, normal range for a non-diabetic is about 3.5 to 5.5%. 5.8 for a diabetic is pretty good. If you were type 1 it would be fantastic. Diabetes is said to be under control when the HbA1c is below 7%. Your morning figures are on the high side though so there's still room for improvement there.

5.8% is great and making me jealous. That's a fine number to have and hopefully in 3-6 months you'll get another one and it won't be any higher.

That's good Andy,

5.8 is bordering on non-diabetic by most clinical standards so you can be pleased with that. You must be doing something right.

HbA1c will reflect the previous 3 months or so blood glucose. Your result from your January test reflects your control during October-December last year and that doesn't give you much information about where you are now.

The most important thing about HbA1c results is the trend - if they are on a downward trend, even if high, that's encouraging. If they are getting higher even if low, that's cause for concern. Low and stable is the best!

Isn't it a bit unusual to have to wait that long for results? I get mine within a couple of days and some I know get them instantaneously.

I don't know what targets you set (or are set) for your bg, but 8 or more is definitely high and you could do with getting them lower IMHO.

Good luck!

My Doc is bit on the slow side. Hwanted me to be treated by the clinic and they wanted me treated by the doc, so neither of them did anything!

I have another test in 2 weeks so fingers crossed it will still be the same.

Any thoughts from anyone how to get morning figures down?

About as many as members of this forum I would think!
Falling between the two main tracks (assuming you are not vegan):

1. A high carbohydrate diet that is likely to be endorsed and recommended by your physician. You will not be able to maintain a normal bg without meds on this diet.

2. A low carbohydrate diet that is unlikely to meet with your physician's approval unless they already have results from patients on this diet. It is common to be able to maintain normal bg with this diet.

You need to give your dietary preferences and maybe confirm it is only the morning (fasting?) bg that is a problem i.e. pp bg is fine at other times.
I'm sure you will then get all the advice you can handle...

My morning bg can be a bit high if it was high the night before. I don't know if that's relevant here as I'm on insulin but worth a bedtime check.

You JUST got back results from a test in Jan? Results should be available within 72 hours, tops.
