Hi Everyone,

I am fairly new to the site and hoped to get some feedback.
I have been on Lantus for about a year (after 4 years on NPH). I just went through a wack of tests for a recent weight gain of approx. 12 lbs. and the only logical explanation is the Lantus. I am not very seriously considering the pump and had a few questions:
1. Which pump is receommended? Are they almost all the same? I was looking at the Metronic pump?
2. Has anyone found weight loss by pumping with greater control over their sugars? My current A1C is 7.0 and was lower on NPH.

Thanks Everyone,

Steph:hello:

You are NOT seriously considering a pump? Is that correct, or did you mistype?

A pump CAN cause weight gain because it's so easy to "cheat" when eating. Takes a lot of self restraint to lose weight, but with the restraint, the pump is a great tool for losing weight with proper usage and a proper diet (no FUN!!!).

I don't think every pumper experiences weight gain, but, for many, it does happen. And I think it's due to a couple of different things.

For one, many become a little to liberal with what they choose to eat, probably b/c they feel that now it's so easy just to cover whatever it is with insulin. Personally speaking, when I first went on the pump, this became an issue for me. It was so much easier for me to eat whatever I want and press a button to bolus than it is to inject. You'd be surprised at how quickly we gain weight, or at least it seems.

Secondly, many pumpers find that with pumping, their control improves. This means that their bodies aren't losing nutrients from maintaing high numbers and so the nutrients are being let into the cells-hence, weight gain.

After about 3 years of pumping, I am finally starting to see a little weight loss, but, frankly, it's not easy. I've become a low-carber (somewhat) and I exercise like a fiend to avoid gaining additional weight. For me, it seems like maintaining a good weight is a struggle and so I have to work at it extremely hard. I swear, all I have to do is look at food or even think about it and I gain, so it's a bit problematic.

Good luck with your decision and pls keep us posted! :)

Sorry I mis-typed. Yes, I am wanting to go on the Pump.

I have had the same issues with weight gain. I don't know what to do to lose weight. I have been trying everything....I eat well and work out...and I can't lose a pound. I never has this problem before. I was hoping getting rid of the Lantus would make a difference. Has anyone noticed any changes by switching to the pump? I am feeling so frustrated and willing to try almost anything at this point. :s:

The thing that puts weight on me is recovering from hypos. I overcorrect and get too many carbs per day from dealing with hypos. They are mostly my fault because I hate getting high, so when I see a high reading I take a corrective bolus, and usually I'm too aggressive with the bolus, thereby causing myself to go low within a short time. The better regulated you can get, the chances are you weight will stablize because you won't be eating because you "have to".

I suspect the weight gain from the lantus is not so much actually from lantus as it may be from better control and a less rigorous schedule than you may have had with N. If this is the case, then pumping will not help you lose weight. However, you can lose weight while pumping if you eat less than you burn off.

Hi, I went on Byetta 6 weeks ago (still on Lantus for a couple weeks yet) but I have lost over 17 pounds in those 6 weeks. My BG's are great (before they were high 250's and up) Right now I average in the 90"s. My PA is very happy with my progress. Ask about Byetta (only bad thing about Byetta is that 48% of the people who try it quit, due to upset stomach) I had no problems at all and will never give that drug up. It works for me. You could ask you endo about it???

Byetta doesn't do anything for people with type 1, but symlin may be worth looking into.
