Needle Set Question

If you use a needle set (instead of a cannula set) and you put it in and find it is umcomfortable where you put it, can you just take it out and put it somehwere else, or do you have to either tolerate it or waste it like you do with the cannula sets?

From all I have read about them, you just pull it out and move it, no big deal.

I'm trying to get a couple samples of these myself.. (Contact and Basic)

Dewwy has told me in the past, in trying to persuade me to use them, that they can be moved and reused if something is wrong with them. I'm not sure then why you would need more than 1 set per year, but I guess for sterile reasons.

I've reused needle sets. Trying to reuse the tape is the main problem. They usually need more tape added the second time to hold them down.

I use the Sure-T and Polyfins, both are needle sets.... If I hit a painful spot I just move it to another spot ,, if needed I use a strip of IV3000......

If you have an IV3000 or similar dressing available, you can reinsert.

I was always a cannula type guy until I started having trouble with Quick Sets and took a gamble on the Sure-T, which is steel. It's just as comfortable as the QS, if not even a bit MORE comfortable for me. I can't stand any other steel needle sets...

Well, I'm trying out a sample of the Contact Detach set. Put it in last night, in the abdomen. That tends to be my most sensitve area.

So far, so good! The insertion was the easiest, most painless insertion I have ever done. The needle is sooo SMALL! The real test though will be how will it feel tomorrow before I change it, and how will the site look after extraction.

I'm only going to do 48 hours this time. Actually, I'm probably going to go to 48 hours for all my sites/sets, as that last day seems to add 70% of the total irritation for the 72 hour wear. (with cannula sets)

I've always pulled them out, cleaned them off with an alcohol swab & put them back in in a spot that was more comfortable. I've also had to do it more than once in a day when I hit a couple of "bad spots" (i.e. bleeders, etc.). The only thing I've found it to be was annoying. Other than that, no problem. :)

And.....I know I'll get in trouble for this one :tomato: but I've also re-threaded cannula sets when in a pinch (had to move the set without having another one in the immediate area).

Sometimes with the Insets, if I unwrap the tubing too quickly, I'll yank the cannula off the needle. In that case, I rethread, but that is the only time I ever have done it.

Just tonight i took out a needle that had been in for about 2 hours and was uncomfortable. I put it in elsewhere and it is real comfortable now. I am wondering if i need to worry about an increase risk of infection. I cleaned off the new site but didn't clean the needle or anything. thanks

First sample, in the abdomen, total comfort for the 48 hours I had it in, and the insertion was the most painless and quickest I have ever had. Looking at the site, I can hardly tell a site was there!

Second, put in tonight in the love handle area. Discovered a bit ago that it was dislodged (bgs real high, and a little discomfort, then looking at it it was obvious.) NO PROBLEM, pulled it out, moved it and stuck an IV3000 over it, voila!

Who did you order the samples from?

I've had to move the Sure-T sets a couple of times when they hurt. I use Hypafix to re-tape them. Hypafix is the same adhesive as the stuff they use in the sets. On another forum I read a message for a guy with no insurance who uses the bent needle sets, and he says that after 3 days he pulls it out and moves it to another site and reuses it. Not sure how many times he reuses each set, but if you're paying for everything out of pocket and are on a real tight budget it's better than going back to injections. Plus the bent needle sets are the cheapest, at least through Minimed.

I wouldn't reuse a Sure-T after 3 days but if I had to move it during that time I would.

I'm on Animas's website looking at the different sets they have. They have the Basic with no disconnect feature. How do you shower if you can't disconnect? What if you need to prime air bubbles out? Seems like sets would have to have a disconnect feature.

Aren't Animas pumps waterproof? I guess you just find someplace to stash it without disconnecting. If you use the longer tubing you can probably set it on the side of the tub or on the floor of the tub, depending on where you've placed the set.

Minimed makes a Luer Lock metal set with a disconnect. It leaves a short tail attached to the cannula when you disconnect, like their Sof-Sets do. The ones with the release are more expensive than the ones that don't have it.

Yeah, they are waterproof, but still easier to disconnect for showers.

I got the samples from the local Animas clinical rep. It was rather a chore, actually, as they had to get the approval of my doc before issuing a sample.
