Hello -

I've decided to try to join this forum to find compadres in common. Seems the pregnancy forum I belong to doesn't have too many diabetics - and the ones that are there get GD very late.

My husband and I had IVF for this pregnancy. I was started on a slew of medications that we're assuming threw me into full blown diabetes. I had been pre-diabetic for about three years. Seems I get thrown over the top with certain medications.

Anyways, it would be nice to have other people to chat with re: this, since it is fairly new to me. I just had appts with both my endocrinologist and OB docs yesterday for the first time and they're VERY disappointed with my blood sugars (average of about 140 with a1c this morning of 6.2).

I just starting taking NPH at night - last night for the first time. I had a wicked hypo spell approx 13 hours later -- at 1pm today. I also take 6u regular with each meal. This is a new protocol, compared with the humalog sliding scale I had myself on previously.

Anyways, if you are pregnant or have had a pregnancy with early diabetes and insulin use, I'd be very interested in chatting with you. Thanks for reading!

Hello and welcome aboard!

I have had to pregnancies with diabetes. One was with a sliding scale regimen and my last pregnancy I had a pump. I never got use to the whole sliding scale treatment because you have to eat according to how much insulin you take. The whole basal and bolus is what looks like the best method for controlling diabetes. The basal is a long acting that you take to cover your sugars all day and night. A bolus which is fast acting you take with each meal you eat. When on this regimen you carb count and take the fast acting (bolus) insulin according to how many carbs you intake. The only downside of this regimen is you can't take the long acting other wise know as Lantus during pregnancy.

Maybe you can look into a pump? I had great control using a pump my last pregnancy compared my other pregnancy when I was on MDI's. Hope this helps and isn't confusing. There are others here that I'm sure will come forward and add even more information.

Thanks for the welcome and responses.

I really have absolutely no excuse except for pure sloth. My first 4yr degree was in nutrition, although I've never actually worked in the field. I currently work as an ER nurse! So I should know diet and diabetes inside/out. I'm ashamed to say I can't even remember how to carb count! I'll probably go in for my dietitian appt to see a new grad who needs to teach me what I've been neglecting the past 10 years.

I don't currently take Lantus, but NPH. With my first pregnancy, they also had prescribed this (although my blood sugars normalized back then). Starting NPH last nite scared the h3ll out of me. I was so paranoid of having another hypoglycemic rxn. Little did I know it would hit me 13 hours later.

Anyways, I had been dosing myself with sliding scale humalog, depending on what I ate. I feel it was better. But I guess I just didn't give myself enough insulin!

My OB thought the regular insulin would be better, since it has a longer half life. So far it just seems I'm taking more and more insulin. And with that NPH, I can see I can't so much as be late on my lunch meal.

I'm so nervous about compromising this pregnancy. We've had two miscarriages and at my age and the recent expense of this IVF, we don't have too many options remaining.

Where are all the prego diabetics???
