Maybe it is just my inerent scepticism. But I smell a rat here. The suggestion, based on study results, that all pre-diabetics should take Avandia sounds like like a concerted effort to grab the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It is along the lines of all those statin manufacturer funded studies aimed at getting healthy people to take cholesterol lowering drugs. :hmmmm2:

I saw the same study called DREAM (Diabetes REduction Assessment with ramipril and rosiglitazone Medication) at the GSK site.
Short excerpt only:
Avandia® reduces risk of progression from pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes by 62 percent in largest ever diabetes prevention trial.
Issued – Friday 15th September 2006, London
"In the largest diabetes-prevention trial ever conducted, Avandia® (rosiglitazone maleate) reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 62 percent relative to placebo among people at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This highly statistically significant reduction of 62 percent (p<0.0001) was additive to standard counselling on healthy eating and exercise. The results of the landmark study are being reported today both in The Lancet and at the 42nd annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD)."
You can view it in its entirety here: http://www.gsk.com/media/archive.htm
Look under the September 15th entry for Avandia. It's directly related to your newsday link, and has additional information such as the data, references and the side effects of Avandia. I would have posted it here for all however it was 1824 words worth (no, I didn't count them individually, I have software to do that ha ha!).
Enjoy!
Steve
I found that I get more information regading Diabetes on this forum and on oversea websites than on any site in SA.
Sometimes I wonder how many people really suffer from Diabetes, that don't know it or don't want to know it.
Mine was discovered by accident. I did not have had any of the symptoms.

I bet there are more people with diabetes that don't know they have it than those that do...
