Do you know your blood type?

Just wondering how many people know their blood type. If so... what are you?

I honestly can't remember. I do know that I was told back when I was pregnant but that was 16 years ago. I've slept since then, LOL. :rofl:
I'll have to ask when I go back to the doctor on Oct. 2.

I was a keen blood donor. 3-4 times a year during at least 10 years. I was told A+ is the most common blood type. Don't know if it's true.

I thought that was O+, or maybe I think that because O+ is the type anyone can use if you need a transfusion. For some reason doctors used to be reluctant to tell you blood types. My kids wanted to know theirs but our doctor would not or could not tell me, almost gave an attitude of "Why do you want to know?" They did not find out until they needed surgery as adults.

I'm one of those rare kinds. I can't remember if it's the O or that AB thing. So I partially know, does that count for something?

lead to a 'blue baby' that would need a transfusion as soon as it was born. This was over 50 years ago :)
I think they do tests and treatment now.

I'm O-. They have a medication called RhoGham. You get a shot of RhoGham every time it is possible that maternal and fetal blood mix...During an amnio...after birth, etc. What a great thing!

I just found out recently that I am O+. Back in July I found out that I am allowed to donate blood, so I did. They told me that I would receive a donor card in the mail to speed up the process of future donations - don't have to fill out all of the forms and the card is the only ID I'll have to show. It t also shows my blood type.

Last night my phone rang and it was someone from the New York Blood Center looking to sign me up for my next donation. I think you can donate every 54? or 56? days and that day was Sunday the 17th. They wasted no time calling me, and I'm now registered to donate this Friday at 9:30am.

I was just looking up info on blood types and I think it said that O+ is the universal donor. So people with A, B and AB can get O+ blood. I think O+ people can only receive their own type.

O- is the universal blood -- what you get in a dire emergency.

I'm B- and ever week they take a unit of blood from me and throw it in the garbage. This is to get my iron down to normal.
When I started doing phlebotomies back in June my Ferrite was 2271 as of the 8th of this month is 1391. They want it below 50, so I have a long ways to go yet. I wish I could donate it so it would not go to waste. However just doing chemo and a transplant I cannot donate for another 6 years I think. I do phlebotomies every Friday. Think of all the wasted blood.

A+ And I was the kid in the high school biology class that the teacher looked at amiss. My father is O+ and my mother is O+. My biology teacher told me that was impossible. It isn't. It is rare (I am a mutant) but it CAN happen. Yes.....my parents are my parents. I look exactly like my Dad and my Mom says she was there so she knows I am hers. LOL.

Highly unlikely ... but yes possible if one of the O parents is the very rare O-bombay blood type and that O-bombay parent has an A gene that doesn't hook to the red cells then two O parents could have an A type offspring. The ABO blood system is far more complex than many science teachers or websites will lead you to believe.

Bad news is if that one of your parents is indeed an O-bombay then they are in very dire straits if they need blood. The can only receive blood from themselves or another O-bombay. What is the more likely story is that someone has been mistype along the way.

I'm b+ and around here that's fairly rare. My daughter's o+ so I must assume that, that's what my hubby is. Since my son hasn't had any medical issue's yet we don't know his type. The only reason we know my daughters is becuase she need some blood transfusions as a baby. Here they only do the test for medical reasons...the reason being the cost.

I am the most common type O+, I know this because I used to be a blood donor in the pre-D days.

I'm a type O+. I don't understand how those of you in the last 20 years don't know your kids' blood types, since they started ABO typing about then. I know all of my kids' blood types. (Incidentally, they are all O+ as well.)

Here's the chart for ABO compatibility:
Recipient blood type Donor must be
AB+...............Any blood type
AB-...............O- A- B- AB-
A+................O- O+ A- A+
A-................O- A-
B+................O- O+ B- B+
B-................O- B-
O+................O- O+
O-................O-

So, as you can see, O- is the *universal donor*, though O+ can be used with other Rhesus positive ABO types.
