This is about Abbott's Freestyle Navigator soon to be FDA approved. The sensors will be approved for five days and the navigator will be labeled for use with finger stick testing. Shortly after winning FDA approval Abbott expects to seek approval for no finger stick testing by using studies already in hand or soon to be completed.

There is three pages to read. On page two there is a paragraph about Johnson & Johnson saying, earlier this month said it was developing its own continuous glucose monitor, with clinical trials set to start in early 2007. I guess they don't keep everything quiet.

The future is looking brighter in knowing your numbers!

I read the article, but didn't see anything about an imminent release date. Did I miss something pertinent?

It didn't give an exact date. Just said soon and by the end of the year which we all knew any way. It could be tomorrow or next month for all we now, but no more then three months.

The article was released three hours ago, thought I share anyway.

Thats awesome. Abbott makes top quality products imo.

From what I remember; Abbott aquired Freestyle(therasense?) about 5 years ago, right when the flash was introduced and for a pretty penny. I hope the people that were aquired are still working there and they come out with the best CGMS. It might help Abbott getting covered in more insurance plans too.

The navigator seems very promising from what I have read on it. Looks like they may when the dog fight in the cgms market. They are excpecting sale to be an annual of $1 billion.

Should we be thinking to buy some stock here?

I'm glad you found that article, regardless of the release date info not set in concrete, Tony.

I can't wait to see if I can get a demo of it, even if there's a modest cost involved.

Nah...Cyborg might give it a try and it won't work well...then he sues them for all they are worth...there goes our investment!

Abbott, historically over the past 5 years, is a break even stock. Plus it would probably need a good 2 years to mature to reflect positivly on its options.

I think it would do alot for it's stock and it would be instant. When Microsoft came out with Windows 95, stock was extremely low the few months before hand. If you bought it 6 months before, you got a great deal (because they delayed the release date) and then if you sold about a week after Win 95 was released, you would have quadrupled your profits (or some high amount, I can't remember what mine did back then.)

Google was the same way. So there is some immediate effect with a stock. It just depends, if you are buying long term, yeah, you have to wait a few years before you see the dividend payout. But if you are the buy/sell in a few months type, you can make alot in a short time.

I still bang my head I didn't get on the Google bandwagon when I should have.

By the time we could have bought Google the price was over 100, who knew it would go up to 400 today.

So your buying some Abbott stock?

I might get a few shares, nothing major like my Microsoft or P&G stock. I'm a long term person though, dad bought Microsoft back in the early 90s and then transferred it to my name when I turned 18. P&G came from my Grandfather. I'm just not one to get into medical stock though, it's one of the most unpredictable but also very profitable.

I know that they're kind of dancing around the whole release date (so as not to get hopes up too high if it's delayed), but it sure would be nice to know. Guess after all this waiting, I'm getting a tad impatient (like some others :D)...I've heard from different sources (all credible) that it was to be released this fall (which, it is fall), so I'm guessing it'll either be the end of this year, or possibly spring of 07 (more likely Spring of 07)?

Let's hope they don't take a page out of Microsoft's playbook, and delay, delay, delay...

They did have a huge delay because they had to refile. They were attempting to go for too many things at once, including only requiring the initial 10 hour calibration and no other fingersticks for anything. They then changed their mind and reapplied with lesser restrictions hoping to get it to the market sooner. Once they start selling, they are going to reapply to the FDA to gain the "no fingerstick double check for adjustment" section along with a few other items that they have research proof on.

I truely think we will see it by the end of this year.

They first filed with the FDA back in 2003, I also think they will be approved by the end of the year.

Well it sure would be a nice Christmas gift, if released in time. :D What about the Aviator pump? Is that a team-up between Abbott & Smiths Medical? I've not seen any news from Smiths regarding this, but I keep hearing about the Aviator...

Tony

Oh the Aviator isn't just from Abbott? Some reason I thought it was.

Tony, yes and no. Abbott is making the pump as the Freestyle Aviator, but in partnership with Deltic Smith. Just like they did with the Cozmonitor, which is why the cozmonitor uses Freestyle Strips.

That's what I thought. However, I've not seen Smiths report on it or its progress much, if at all. It's one of those odd situations. :dontknow:

Then this would be promoted from the freestyle site? Once it becomes available.

This is where it's really odd. Supposedly the pump is 100% complete and approved. Abbott bought the pump completed from DEKA Research & Development and won FDA approval in December of 2005. Here is the actual FDA approval letter.... http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/pdf5/k051041.pdf

So you ask, where is the pump? According to a site I found, they haven't created anything besides prototypes yet. I have no idea what they are waiting for.

Since it's going by the name Freestyle Aviator I would think it would come from from the Freestyle site. They do plan on eventually linking it with the Navigator, but initially, the Navigator won't have that feature.

It could be that behind the scenes, Smiths Medical & Abbott have a written agreement of sorts, or something (like one of those "you can't come out with an insulin pump for 5 years" clauses?). I don't want to speculate too much, just giving thoughts as to why this may be.

I think you should always go with your gut on you rpersonal finances. For me I am not willing to bet money I don't really have on what I believe might gain a slight profit in 2 years, again thats just imo, and will probably turn out opposite because I am trying to predict it lol. Also its very hard for me to invest in things that wont ultimately lead to a cure. In general, even with microsoft, it took many many people a long long time to get their money back, and i don't want to invest that time in aiding diabetes, i want it invested in cures, and the cure being the main products companies offer.

ok, off that soap box.
