wasn't real sure how to do this, hope it goes through. Sounds like I am a big drinker, but not. But when we go out to Mexican, I do love a Margarita. Just seems like the thing to do and goes. Anyway, I have been trying to get a count to enter into the food data base on my pump (am working hard on that but may be too complicated for me to figure out--lost my info twice already). I would like a reminder on my pump on the Margarita, Bloody Mary maybe, and one or two others just in case. I couldn't figure it out from the Calorie King book--seemed like it was giving two different numbers in two places. Went to the web site--good site--gives lots of info. if you haven't been there. According to what they said a Margarita has 4 carbs. That sounded like it was awfully low, I would have guessed higher.
While I am here--it also said the cheese biscuits at Red Lobster were only 17 carbs, that also sounded low.
If I could get a close count on a few drinks it would help. I hate to go out with a group of friends or couples and have to whip out my book and look them up and all. Hoping to put a few numbers in the data base to make it easier on me and not so obvious. My friends probably wouldn't care if I sat and looked through my book, but would rather not. Found my favorite Starbucks drinks on the website too. I may finish this food list one of these days!!! It sort of looks like it will be as hard to stroll through the list on the pump as looking it up in the book though. Think the "favorite" list will help though.
If anyone knows a couple of counts, please advise. Thanks.

oops!! I forgot an important one--cannot find a Hurricane--just in case I ever get to go back to New Orleans--a city I love. Any guess on carbs on that one. My husband asked, I looked in book, but couldn't find it. Thanks again.

In my experience, you'll never find two mixed drinks that have the exact same carb count. Different sized glasses and different servers sometimes will pour out different proportions of ice, liquor and mixer.
I prefer to stay away from the sugary mixers if possible--it's not something I personally crave. But I suggest experimenting & guessing smartly if you go with the sugary mixers.

I agree. Mixed drinks are real tough to handle. It's a trial and error thing and results can be different every time. Having a hypo on alcohol is not fun. Try sugar free mixers if you really want a mixed drink.

Somehow I think that particular drink is considerably less popular in New Orleans now...

Keep in mind that Calorie King may say 4 carbs because it's taking out the alcohol effect. Alcohol has a lowering effect, so in a sense negative carbs.
As for a Huricane, New Orleans style, good luck. There are to many ingredients in there and too many different alcohol types to effectively even guess what it will do to you.
For mixed drinks, you pretty much have to have one and see what it does to you. Drink and test alot. Then when you have that down pat for that drink, don't forget it and you can use that in the future. Then if you want to try other drinks do the same thing. Pretty much, don't be a bartender with drinks, have maybe a handful at max so you know how it affects your body.

I would hope that Calorie King or any other nutrition information source would not alter the carb content being provided in anyway!

"But when we go out to Mexican, I do love a Margarita"
I'm with you, I love a good Margarita. But since being diagnosed in August I haven't had one......sure do miss it.
"Sounds like I'm a big drinker, but not"
Same here, I don't drink often or much when I do but I do enjoy an occasional Margarita, Baileys or Rum and Diet Coke. I will suggest a Rum and Diet Coke. The only counting is for the rum.
What do you eat at the Mexican place? Do you go to local or chain places?

I found out that when i drink beer, my joints tend to hurt a lot the other days.
Anyway apart from that drinking whisky let me enjoy all night and i get up in a good mod the other day.

What I was told by my Endo for a Margarita was to calc 15 carbs (I like the strawberry marggie) for the fruit and don't count the carbs for the alcohol. To make sure I eat carbs with it and that my BS is 140-150 before I go to sleep. I've been dying to try it but chickened out both times. I did order a book called "Low Carb Bartender - Carb Counts for Beer, Wine, Mixed Drinks and More.' It looks interesting but I just received it today and haven't had a chance to dive into it yet.

I've found tequila is A-ok on the bgs, if you're just shotting it... A bottle of the stuff had no effect on me at all... well, not on my bgs anyway...

I'm not much of a mixed drink person, unless it's Bacardi and Diet Coke or a Tequila Sunrise. Don't care much for the over sugary things, even before Diabetes graced my life. They fill ya up too quickly! ;) I do have an occasional Marguerita tho. Usually the BIG one too, when I do! LOL
My thing is BEER! When we go out, and are drinking, we get it by the pitcher. There's 3 of us girls, we're the drinkers, not the guys! LOL And by the end of the evening, we've gone thru two or three pitchers. This is usually about twice a month. Sometimes a lil more, more often less! I'm always EXTRA aware of how I'm feeling, and make SURE I eat and check my blood! I've done well so far. Only one time I started going low. I think it was just one of those "freak" things tho.
I'd do like someone else suggested. Have one, and keep check to see how it affects you and then go from there! And also, as someone else mentioned, mixed drinks are NEVER exactly the same every time! So, it's a guessing game all the way around.
I can never do mixed drinks without my blood sugars going all over the place. Especially anything with juice in it!The most I can have is one drink without it affecting my readings too much. I LOVE beer but the carbs dont work too well with me. I try not to have it more than once or twice a month and only a bottle. Ive been trying wine, white with ice in it or with soda water and that seems to work ok.A weak vodka and diet coke isnt too bad either!

Must be doing something wrong, as when I try to reply something happens and it doesn't come out. Probably will now that I am trying it a different way.
Anyway, went to that sight and had a good list by calorie/points. What is points. Would that be 15 carbs?? Maybe weight watcher points??
Thanks for all replies though.

I don't drink any more, but I used to and I'll tell you a thing about hurricanes. (My hubby is from New Orleans, we've spent way too much time there) Every bar or restaurant has their own mix. I think it would be impossible to nail down an exact carb count. Down here (I can't speak for the rest of the country) you can buy hurricane mix to make you're own. Doing that would probably be the only way you would ever know for sure.

Calorie King is a good website to check out for carb counts on drinks - I've found it very helpful!

I've been told whiskey is the most suitable for diabetics, which was very good news because i love my whiskey. Although, I have found that it lowers my BGL and i have to compensate by eating something.

Straight gin or Vodka, with an olive or two, will lower by BG to normal. Red wine (11% or higher) will do almost as well. Plus for red wine is that it contains melatonin, which gives sound sleep.

A diabetic should only drink if he is alone, . . . or if he's with someone.

Used to drink, don't anymore(too many visits to ER).Our beer over here has WAY too much sugar in it,and tastes so nice i couldn't stop myself from getting plastered.I can't stand whiskey(apart from JD),cannot stand wine, the only other drink i liked was vodka and that stuff is just evil.So i just stay sober now and laugh at all the drunks.Guiness was ok until i found out what it does to you when you drink too much too often

I love Irish Cream and I just discovered Kalua again... They both hate me now... Wild B/G's...Into the 450's + But I most enjoy a 4/1 mixture of Beer and Clamato Juice. Yum Yum... I have not noticed much of a change in my B/G. I was hoping that it would actually lower my B/G as the dr warned me it might....

barcadi rum and diet coke has no carbs or sugar in it, i seen that on a sign at the liquor store, and if you use one part (one shot) and a little bit of coke, the only calories your drinking is 66 calories if you count calories
alcohol causes the liver to stop producing glucose, so there for the only glucose your body has if from what you eat, so in a sense if you try to drink alcohol, and use insulin around the same time or try to bolus for it, you go tooooo low, this is why IMO diabetics end up in the hospital....but however im not a insulin user so i could just be blowing smoke, since im so dense in this subject lol
i have test a theory of mine for the past 3 nights... i have drunk one shot of barcadi rum before bed, and the next morning my fasting numbers are within range, no dawn phenomenom(sp) and i have been able to keep my glucose with in range for the rest of the day.
