Question: what is a good book that gives you the amount of carbs in all foods and gives you the amount of carbs in meals at different restaurants? Where can I buy it?
Thanx!

I don't know the name on one specifically, but if you did a search based on subject, I'm sure Amazon would have several available. Also, the ADA offers several I think thru their website.
I have one that came w/ my food scale.

Hi Mike,
I haven't found the "perfect" book either, but, i suspect that the perfect book would have to be different for each of us, which makes it a difficult book to publish!! ;)
However, i do recommend "The Doctor's Pocket Calorie Fat and Carbohydrate Counter". The food lists are very extensive and the 2003 edition has a guide to 150 fast food chains . It is also pretty small and convenient. It even has cute little jokes and quotes like this Chinese Proverb: "Man who eat with one chopstick never have problem with obesity". :D
The main negative point for me - and i say this as a north american living in Paris - is that it is not quite 'french' enough for me. First of all, i would like it to be in metric, but i would also gladly trade the knowledge that 3 Tablespoons of canned Bee Maggots (in the Ethnic, gourmet & miscellaneous section) has no carbs for the carb count of a good traditional french dish like Cassoulet. I know, call me crazy! :)

I bought about four of these suckers to begin with, then settled on one called "The Diabetes Carbohydrate and Fat Gram Guide" because it was the most comprehensive in my opinion. It's paperback size but I've never not found what I was looking for.

I got(sniched, nicked) a copy of the book that my dietician used where I first took that class. It's too large, lrgal pad size, to haul around but it's wonderful to find a quick listing of any foods.
If my wife and I plan to go out, we settle on several restaurants and I download info about their meals from one of several sites I've got so I can guesstimate pretty close as to how much to cover any of their choices

rzr, good idea about the downloading! Unfortunately for me, I only have access to the internet through work...so, unless I know what we are having for dinner that wouldn't work for me. But my book helps, especially after last night. We had KFC and I really wasn't positive how much insulin I should take, I was going to wing-it.

Hi, Mike
We also had this problem with figuring how much carbs in stuff. But then my boyfriend got a palm for his birthday. And we found a very good use for it now. I've downloaded the food database into it. and all the food lists with their nutritional values are there. Even when we are in a restaurant it doesn't look odd when he pulls it out to check the list for values - he just makes an impression of a very busy and important man indeed :p who has too many business appointments :D
I'm not sure if you heard about this DiabetesPilot thingy? We downloaded it on the palm. It has a very extensive database, but unfortunately it's not really great if you live in Britain. We can't get the measures right and the database mainly cosists of American food, including chain restaurants and fast food. So, perhaps it will be more handy to you. here's the link
