I apologize that I already posted this in the Diabetes forum, but that was by accident and I know that personally, I only check the Type 1 section and I'm curious about this.

I definitely was going through some major Ketoacidosis yesterday at work. I ate a piece of pineapple while I waited for a ride. My mouth was almost of fire about 5 minutes later. It hurt immensely. It was a sharp pain in my mouth and upper throat. It mostly went away in about 30 minutes. As soon as I got back to my apartment, I made some sugar-free lemonade. After drinking the entire glass (I was obviously thirsty) the same thing happened. I was in tears of pain. It went away mostly about an hour later. However, it still hurts a little right now. Does this have anything to do with acid imbalances from Ketoacidosis? Has anyone else experienced this? I couldn’t find anything online. I'm going to a new doctor this week and plan on discussing this with her, but I was curious now.

I don't think ketoacidosis has anything to do with it, it was probably a bad pineapple, maybe you are allergic to them.

Both things, pineapple and lemonaid, are very high in acids.

You evern notice pineapples have a little needle like pices in them .. thos always seem to irritate my throat as well. Then to add lemonade on top of that would probably flare it up again pretty easily..

Any chance you have a mouth and/or throat infection? I had a yeast infection that just about killed me that had symptoms like you describe - but it was just before I was diagnosed - my BG levels were extremely high...

If you were going through "major" ketoacidosis at work, you would have probably been smelling and looking like you were intoxicated. Definately not safe!

What have you been doing to keep your glucose numbers in normal range?

I have had the same thing happen except mine happened after recovering from DKA and I only ate a sandwhich. I do notice it happens once in awhile when I can feel DKA coming on.

There's an enzyme in fresh pineapple that is a natural meat tenderizer. It's possible you had a very acidic pineapple that could have possibly started some breakdown on your lips/mouth. That's actually happened to my lips before from eating pineapple.

Canning pineapple deactivates the enzyme - only fresh pineapple contains it. A lot of people use pineapple to marinade meat with. A similar enzyme is in papaya.
