thanx for all the nice welcomes...nice to see there's a wide mix of people and nice to see some fello midlanders on here, Altho i'm not originally form the midlands...more of a suthener, well kind of!
I hav a question about chocolate! i might post it in a new thread if no-one responds on here but........
is it ok to have in small doses? it doesnt seem to affect me much anyway and the stuff i tried that said it was suitable for diabetics really put my blood sugar up!
Is it a bad idea to have any kind of chocolate coz it's so rich in sugar that you get too much too soon?
I have a bit of a problem with saying no to the stuff but i am trying! (Altho i failed miserably five minutes ago, think i may hav had a little too much!)
i was being really sensible with everything i eat and do for the last six weeks, i feel so stupid now...i hope my b.sugar doesnt go up too much! .......

My dear young lady, Chocolate is one of the Four Basic Food Groups, coupled with the fact that as any Harry Potter fan knows Chocolate is the True Cure for many ailments. LOL
Seriously though, I am addicted to chocolate and to deal with that addiction I have switched to Semi-sweet baker's chocolate. I have tried them all (Brands in the U.S.), Baker's, Hersey's, Nestle's and many others.
The reason for Semi-sweet is thgat it has less Carbs than Milk Chocolate and I can carefully measure the Carbs I do ingest because the pieces are cut in such a way as to let you know there are either 9 or 8 Carbs per piece. Also, the semi-sweet is more intense in flavor and taste so I can more easily limit my in-take.
All that being said, I prefer the Nestle's Semi-Sweet Baker's Chocolate because it looks like a "Real" bar of Chocolate. The wrapping looks like a "Normal" chocolate bar. It is not some Brick that is difficult to break with your teeth or grainy like cheaper chocolates from a WWII movie. It's texture is almost exactly like a Milk chocoalte candy bar. I actually feel as though I'm being allowed to eat chocolate just like I did when I was "Normal."
Just my $.O2(U.S.)

Hi LauRa and Welcome! Hope to see you around often and get to know you better.
As far as the chocolate goes, if you are carb-counting then you can plan for it and include a bit of it in your diet. Don't know if you're injecting insulin or not, but there's ways to do it.
Welcome again,

Hey i see your a cat lover :p me too ;)
I am on insulin but its a mixture so i dont think i can give myself any apart from the two times i'm meant too..
I have a distant friend of the familly whos on non-mixed inulin(whatever it's called :( ) they give themselves a small shot if they've had too much of something i.e chocolate.

... Laura, ever tried the 'diabetic chocolate' at Thornton's???!? Made with sweetners. If you really have a craving you just can't cope with, maybe having a little of it handy could satisfy it? More fat though than in a reg choc bar. That choc doesn't affect my BG. Could be a solution? They also have truffles...

Marie, expect a Large box with air holes in it to arrive "Priority Express" in the next several says--don't worry if there appears to be sound of moans and breathing coming from inside.
Please, just cut the cellotape and stand back, I wouldn't want you to get trampled.

Hey rzr, you think you could stop over here and pick me up? I'm sure you can make room for me in your box considering we're talking truffles and I've never had but **** they sound good...

all this talk of chocolate. Had to go eat a bar from Norway that someone brought me back and when I go to Switzerland this summer well.....diabetes or not I plan to have a tasting party of any and all forbidden foods then when I get to France lets just say one of my cousins is a pastry chef....I think I will be staying with him....lol
Hello, and welcome, LauRa Lu, from America's Dairyland!
Diabetic chocolate is fine as long as you don't eat more than one serving, otherwise you'll spend most of your day in the bathroom, KWIM, LOL! (speaking from personal experience.) If one is desperate enough, one could probably eat unsweetened chocolate. ;)

... Maybe I've found an interesting side line here... exporting 'diabetic choc' to North America... hmmmmm....

i think proper choc tastes SOOOO much better!!! i personally avoid the so called diabetic stuff... its expensive and i dont think it tastes that good to justify spendin the money on it! i normally only have it when i get it as a present! LOL
