I am curious to know how often everyone has an A1C done? Every month? Every couple of months? Twice a year?

I'd like mine done a little more frequently. Right now mine is done every 5-6 months.

Ooops! I just realized this post is in the "pumping insulin" section, but I don't know how to move it to a more appropriate section.

I'm so NOT computer savvy!!!

I have mine done every doctor's visit which is every 3-4 months. An A1C is a history (average) of your BGs over the past 3 months (the lifespan of a blood cell) with 50% based on the last 30 days, then 25% the two months prior. Some have done it every month to see how their control has changed, but to me, I just say every 3 months is fine. 5-6 isn't really that bad and I use to do that till I went off my juvie endo.

It's ok, I got ya covered!

I usually get A1Cs done every 3 months, but have used home tests a couple of times in between visits. It may vary from doctor to doctor, but the "standard" seems to be every 3 months...

Thanks Dewey!

My husband and I want to start a family now and I think my A1C should be done a little more frequently than twice a year. I understand what the A1C is all about and considering my control has improved drastically in preparation for the "onboarding" of a fetus. I'd like to know exactly what my A1C is at conception time.

3 months for me here too - all the diabetics I know are either checked out 3 montly or 6 monthly depending on their control, or their doctors way of doing things.

I was under the impression that any doc would want an hba1c done super regularly - maybe even monthly - for someone wanting to get pregnant. I suppose the daily testing is really the most important though.

I'm not sure what it's like in Canada, but here if I want one done I can call the doc and ask for it. He'll ask why... but he'll do it for me. Sure have to be pro-active with diabetes!

By the way... I've always read that hba1c is a 3 month average, but lately I've seen more & more info that says it covers the last 8 weeks, or even 6 weeks. Perhaps it's not as long ranging as they first thought?

I used to be every 3-4 months for most of my diabetic life. Then I went on the pump, and my life and my diabetes stabalized quite well. Because I'm so predictible, and active, my doc and I both agree that we'll see each other as needed (so I've been going once or twice a year for a while).

I'm thinking of asking for an Rx to have my blood drawn without an appt with my doc. This is because a) I don't really need to see my doc, and b) my doc will see the results and call if there is something he wants to talk about. This is not usually done, but then again, I've never done things the way it's supposed to be done.

Every 3 to 4 months, depending on how my endo appointments fall.

Every 3 months. My doctor left a standing order in the lab, so I can go when I want. And I can also sit and wait after the blood is drawn, and the lab tech will give me the result right then and there.

I get mine about every 4-6 months. It stays pretty much the same.

I have mine tested at my doctor's office every four months, and I test at home in between those visits. But if I've gotten over an illness, or if I've just had a bad cold or particularly stressful month, I will usually get a new test just to keep track of the changes.

for me they will test at every hospital clinic visit-which has generally been 6 monthly over the years, but i'll go to my gp surgery and request one between each visit, never had a probem with that.

Every 3 months, usually at the Dr's office but once a year at the lab with all the other lab tests.

If you have insurance, I suggest you demand an A1c check every 3 months. I believe most insurance companies have to cover it.

Every 3 months. Just had blood drawn today at my primary care doctor's, and won't bother to find ut the results until I see my CDE on the 16th. I've been having problems with highs and I know I'm going to be disappointed in the result, so I don't want to find out any sooner than I have to.
