View Full Version : There out to @#$% you at the drive thru
I had my wife go to Hardee's for me today to get some lunch. She ordered my meal and told them Diet Coke. After taking my lunch Humalog and eating my lunch, I started to feel a little funny. So I had my wife taste my drink and she said it was regular Coke. Now I have been a huge Coke drinker for years. So sometimes I cant always tell if Im drinking diet or not because I no longer taste that diet after taste. I thought it tasted sweet but with fountain drinks you never know. So I tested my self and sure enough I spiked to 230. I took 4 more units of Humalog and quickly got it back under control. This is why I'm extremley paranoid about drive thru's or resteraunts in general when I can't see what there giving me, especialy considering my wife drinks regular Coke. So of course they want to give me the reg Coke and her the diet. Anyway, just wanted to vent.:)
You can test drinks with your blood glucose strips with consistent results. Just be sure to do a controlled test with known diet and regular sodas so you know what results mean what on your meter.

You're right Duck, smart move.
Me, I avoid the fast food fountain drinks completely and go for the water. Years ago I wanted diet and apparently they not only gave me a regular coke, but the machine had malfunctioned and gave me mostly pure syrup with a little ice mixed in. Stupid me, I was working in the yard, sweating like a pig in the hot Florida sun. My wife drove up with the eats, we sat down on the bench and then I took a huge swallow without even thinking... I will never forget that! Stupid me. :shot:
Anyway, from there on out if I want a soda I'll get my own out of the fridge, I know what's it in and I feel safe too.

Those are the times I call up and get a free meal out of it. One time I was eating at a smaller fast food place in a store and I noticed it was regular coke on the first drink, this was at a self serve fill station. So I told the person and they said they'd check and they came back and said they were fine. So I called for a manage who went back and switched the two drinks. They never ran the coke through the line and they told me it was fixed. So I tried again, and no, still messed up. That is when I told them they had to run all the coke and diet coke through the lines for a few minutes to get all of the other one out. They argued with me, but my 5 years in McDonald's knew differently. Finally I won and got about 5 free meals out of it.

Good way to test your soft drink is to dip two fingers in it and let them dry off. If they go sticky, don't drink.
Can't you encourage your wife to order diet Coke too? It tastes the same and should help avoid these sorts of mishaps.

Laura always tastes my coke before i drink it, she usually gets normal coke, so she can taste the difference. If i go to a resturant i always emphasise the word diet when i order coke. Then when he/she brings it to me i ask them if it's diet. Usually i get "i was told just pepsi" so i tell them "no, it has to be diet please", then they take it away. whether they bring the same one back is another question!!

Same here! And would you know, my husband and my children sometimes can't tell either. With fountain drinks, it seems to be harder for everyone.

I can totally relate! :banghead:
And you know what? When I ask if they are sure it's a diet drink, they look at me like some sort of strange insect. I am tired of saying: 'No I don't give a toss about the calories it's the sugar I'm concerned about. I have diabetes.' I'm a bit annoyed having to explain myself and/or justify my query. Wherever and whenever I can... I go for a Perrier instead. Or bottled water.

Often my husband will have a diet drink too. They make mistakes nonetheless...

See, I take a slightly different route to ensure my drink is safe. I order booze instead. When I was travelling round Eastern Europe it was just much more convenient to order beer instead of coke with a meal because diet soft drinks aren't that common out there and the language barrier makes it difficult - people understand 'Coke' wherever they are but 'Diet Coke' usually results in you getting just half the message across.
Well I absolutely detest Pepsi, especially diet. Taste mediciney to me. I tried to get my wife switch to diet but she refuses. She can't hack the taste. I tried to explain to her that once you get sugar out of your system, you cant taste the after taste anymore. Actually I prefer caffeine free diet coke, taste better then regular Coke and keeps my Dr happy since I'm not takin in all the caffeine.

If you can't afford to test it with regular test strips, you can also use Diastix, which are cheaper. Drinks can go right on the strip, but I've heard if it's food you have to chew it first and spit some on the strip - never tried that one myself! Anyway, I use them whenever I'm suspicious. Heh, it even gets the waitress to stop insisting it's diet sometimes!

Also worth mentioning in many parts of Europe a beer is cheaper than a coke!!
Its scary to think that we are only a mishearing away from going nuts on sugar, black coffee for me everytime.

Another thing to watch for... I've walked out of fast food joints when I've seen employees handling money, and with colds, and then go handle the food. The thought of their cold viruses and mucus contaminating my food makes it hard to return to fast food for me.

That happens WAY more often than you think. And I know part of the reason, when I worked in McDonald's, at least the one I worked for, if you called off SICK, you HAD to have a doctor's note or we (managers) were required to write the person up. I thought that was bogus ****, but that was their policy. So, people came to work sick all the time.
I guess I shouldn't tell the 5 second rule then either????

Try to explain to her that she's putting you at risk too - ask her if it's really worth it.

I swear that every single person who refuses to drink diet Coke 'because it doesn't taste as good' has bought in far too much into being a poseur. It's the exact same **** stuff - it tastes pretty much identical, and even if you're one of those hypersensitive people who can allegedly tell the difference - come on! It's not as if tastes totally different or disgusting, is it?

I know that in many Euro countries they're not allowed to call it "diet" as it isnt good for you and regulations in their countries only allow them to call something "diet" if it is beneficial for you and part of a healthy DIET. So to get around it they call it Coke "Light"...
(but hey, drinking booze is much more fun!!) :tee:

Let me let you in on a little secret you may or may not know. Diet Coke is based on the New Coke formula. Coke Zero is based on Classic and it uses a different sweetener. I think Zero taste way better. I talked to a delivery driver that told me he can't give the stuff away in some places.

dkev, I saw your sigline, and it says that your July 2006 A1C = 3.5.
According to the handy dandy HbA1c converter, 3.5 is equal to an average blood glucose of 47.3 mg/dl.
How do you function?!
Or does your lab have a different reference value other than the standard 6.0%?
If your glucose meter doesn't agree with that low, low average (and you test frequently), you might ask your doctor about it -- some people have hemoglobin or are on drugs that interfere with the lab procedure (in that case, a fructosamine test might work better for you).

If there was more talk about this on another post, I'm sorry. But, I am starting a petition in my area about getting more "diet" drink choices in our restaurants (fast food and casual dining). I think a lot more people would be happy to see something like diet sprite, diet dr. pepper, or even diet root beer. With the big health kick going on, everyone would benefit and still enjoy their drink. Most people are either pepsi or coke drinkers, so taking away mr. pibb or wild cherry pepsi and adding more diet choices would not hurt the restaurant sales.
Good luck to all with your drinks. Drink healthy, drink happy.

Ugh I know how you feel! Whenever I order something over the counter I always watch what they're pouring into the cup. Usually I can taste the difference but the point is, If i drink that and get sick, they're liable for it. If I'm at a restaurant I always emphasise on DIET coke. Yeah, I sometimes get looked at as a weirdo but who cares. They usually bring it out with a different coloured straw or a slice of lemon on the cup.
Also, Diet coke in europe is known as coke light. Not every cafe stocks it as its not very popular. So when I was there I just stuck to water and fresh orange juice.

I know what you're saying, but I have to say - gourmet mode here - that I can even tell the difference in Coke made with Cane sugar and the stuff made with high-Fructose syrup.
HOWEVER, I agree that most people should get a firm grip on practicality and quit whining. I switched to a variety of diet stuff, and it's not a huge deal, even if I appreciate the differences in tastes.
Some people get headaches or nausea from certain sweeteners, and they have a specific reason to do what they like.

Have you tried Diet Rite cola ? The Splenda sweetener gives it the sucrose texture Real Coke used to have, without the aspartame taste. I think it's really quite good, and not like Diet Coke or Coke Zero.

I had to quit going to Hardee's for that very reason.
Before that happened, I went in and ordered a Cheese Burger with mayo and ketched only. The woman looked at me blankly, so I said that I wanted a cheeseburger and you can hold the lettuce, tomato, pickle... and everything else but the mayo and ketchup. She said to me, "Do you want the cheese?"
With some frustration I answered, "I woould not have ordeered a Cheeseburger if I did not want the cheese. That would make it a hamburger."
I have not stepped foot in a Hardee's in six years.

In all my years as diabetic I can't recall ever having that happen to me. I can tell the difference between diet and regular sodas still. My dh usually gets DrPepper and that one is easy to tell the difference with. I usually do the sniff test and depending how watered down the drinks are that works but if they are not as syrupy I have to taste test them.
I love Coke Zero, it has become my favorite drink and I was a die hard Pepsi One fan for a long time.
Before I was diagnosed I use to drink Diet Coke b/c it quenched my thirst better than sugar drinks. My mom use to buy 1 or 2 liter glass bottles of diet coke and kept them in the fridge and they were so cold and I would just gulp that drink down, it felt so good hitting the back of my throat.

Fountain drinks are hard to tell sometimes, especially since no one seems capable of getting the water / syrup ratios right. I was in a Wendy's a few times and ordered diet to go only to discover it was regular. I even stood at the counter one time and watched the girl fill the cup from the regular coke fountain. When I questioned her, she re-assured me it was diet. Didn't turn out very pretty that day!
But on the Arby's note, the Arby's near me also has a sugar free lemonade.

Odd, I find normal coke to be less sweet than diet. The Coke Zero stuff kind of throws me a bit. Doesn't taste like Diet Coke.
But yes, use the straw to put a drop on your finger. Not the one you'll be using for your next blood test, heh.
Note, if you're like me, there's a finger or two you NEVER use to test your blood. I have a non-medical job that requires me to handle alcohol wipes and certain odd substances and I don't always have the luxury of washing my hands after. I try to use my thumb and index finger for that and only test with my middle and ring fingers. The thumb requires I go deeper and I forget why I've never used my index finger. Twenty year habit, I guess. I suppose I should test the soda on my pinky. That's the opposite problem of my thumbs.
