View Full Version : which poison now?
Since taking myself of diabex xr my numbers are going up again 160 fasting and again 2 hours after lunch.
I'll see my Dr. by the end of the week, I'd like some advice on whether to go back to one of the Sulphonylureas, I need help. I was reluctant to take them because of the weight gain side effect and the pancreas burn out. I will never take another Diabex or Metformin, this has been going on for months so I know I have done my best to tolerate them.
Is injecting insulin an option? Why wait until complications and then start? My Dr says tablets are so much better these days there is no reason to think about injections yet. What side effects would I expect from Insulin?
Should I ask for a test to see how much insulin I'm producing?
Sorry to ask for help again but my Dr and I don't communicate well. "I DOCTOR, you patient" sort of thing.

I feel bad for you about the Dr thing. I'm really lucky in the Dr department. My Dr listens to me, we communicate very well and he's open to discussing anything I've hesrd or read about and want to try. It doesn't always mean we'll do it but sometimes he say "why not" to see. He's willing to do whatever it takes to get my BG under control.
The next med my doc wanted to try is Actos. I don't really know much about it yet but have you tried that one? What meds other than the evil Metformin have you been on? I also take Amaryl. I made it through the first two months of Metformin **** and every once in a rare while it bites me in the butt (literally) again but it seems to be doing the job for the most part. I've also been having high afternoons after lunch like you are. Those are the subject of my next visit with my Dr this Tuesday.

Thanks Jacqui, I've had 2 different Sulphonylureas added to the Metformin at various times. Looks like I'll end up on Diacicron mr this time.
Take care, Meg

As you have noted, the problem with Sulphonylureas is that they accelarate the demise of your beta cells. Which is really the last thing you want to happen. You really need to focus on making yourself more sensitive to insulin. Injecting insulin could help contain BG levels. But the more insulin resistant you are, the more insulin will have to inject to control your BG.
So, yes, testing your insulin levels will reveal the extent of the insulin resistance problem. Avandia and Actos improve insulin sensitivity. So does exercise and a low-carb diet. Keeping away from carbs of all sorts would probably give you the biggest payback. :)

Have you talked to your doctor about byetta. A pill form is trying to make it's way out. There are also a few other meds that are trying to make it through testing and approval that should give you other options. Take Care, and do what you need to do for now, more help looks like it's on it's way.
In Australia Meglitinides and Glucobay group of medications are not on our P.B.S and I don't think Byetta is used here at all, it's quiet new isn't it?
I had a cystoscopy today including a look at the ureter because of ongoing traces of blood in my urine. The Urologist mentioned that if the little repair work done today doesn't fix things perhaps a little blood is seeping from my kidneys.
My kidney function tests are normal.
I have a pack of Diamicron MR and Glyade. Which one should I try this time? Toss a coin, perhaps.
