Hi everybody. I guess I'm about to embark at a new adventure called diabetes. I was told four days ago that I am diabetic and then I was scheduled for an "education" session this coming Thursday. Its a bit of a downer since my Dad was only 58 when he died from the ravages of this disease. I think he went a long time without being diagnosed, though.

I've made it to 69 and I think I may be in an early stage of the disease, so I've got every thing to be glad about. It's going to be a new world of diet and exercise for me (a fat couch potato), but I plan to deal with it.

I look forward to learning on DiabetesForums.

My regards to all of you who have suffered longer and harder than I.:tee:

Hi Jim, and welcome. What treatment are you using?

Hi Jim, and welcome. What treatment are you using?
Penny,

None yet. I'll know more after I meet with my nurse practitioner on Thursday.

This is my first day on a diet that I have, so far, come-up with on my own. Had a cup of Shredded Wheat with soy milk accompanied by a slice of pineapple for breakfast. I just got back from the salad bar at my local super market - romaine, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, egg slices, sunflower seeds, and diet ranch dressing. I'll have a half portion of split pea soup with ham chunks (I made it from scratch) for dinner this evening.

I bought the book entitled, "The Calorie King: Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter." Seems to be pretty informative.

I walked (not very fast) about a mile around the neighborhood this a.m. Every journey must begin with a first step, right?

Welcome to this great forum, Jim.

Not only do you have to watch your calorie intake to lose weight, you also need to watch your carbohydrate intake so that your blood sugars aren't sky-rocketing. Great to read you got out and did some walking!
