I just did it for my neighbor and it only offered the Ultra 2. Now when I did it, it allowed for the Ultrasmart or Ultra 2. I guess it's all in the way you answer some of the questions.

Thanks. I also got the choice of 2. I went with the Ultra 2 simply because it's smaller. I can use a backup meter and it's a good opportunity to give the Ultra a shot, I never used anything other then my freestyle.

Depends on the policy, Medco does not cover strips or meters. Only thing Medco covers for me is drugs.

I know you've probably heard this before since you've probably dispensed this advice to others -- but did you check with your DME policy? Some companies have the DME cover test strips. :questionm

Yep all my strips, meters pump stuff is all DME. And not covered under Medco. I called once and the person on the phone was shocked when they looked up our plan and they did not cover it.

I ordered my Ultra 2 last Wednesday (10/11) and it showed up on my doorstep two days later! I also had a choice between the UltraSmart and Ultra 2.

got my ulta2 today, must say I kinda like it, I have been using freestyle for a year now, and the one thing I miss is actually seeing the blood being taken into the strip. the ultra2 has this and still uses a small sample and quick test time, I amy just switch.......

I got mine on Saturday. I like it better than my contour. I like that you can put it when u tested ( b4 meal, after meal) and it is very fast. I don't like the coding though, you don't have coding on the contour.

You actually have to fill out the 'survey' and based upon your answers you will be offered a) ultra 2 or b) either an ultrasmart or ultra 2 meter (you choose). Most people have been offered only the ultra 2.

If you complete the survey you will get the offer though. I just did it again to test it out and was offered another ultra2... LOL

Mine came today. An Ultra 2. So far I have only tried the Lancet device. I like it a lot better than the ReliOn one. The 10 strips they sent with it will not last for long. I am not real happy about paying a buck a strip when the ReliOn ones are only 40 cents each. Maybe I will just save it for when Medicare kicks in in February.

I am sure that the goal is to get new customers. Did you tell them you used an Ultra ? If so I don't think you will be getting one, but if you did not I don't understand why they did not offer you one.

I first did mine on 10/16/2006, never saw the U2 they said was on the way. I did it again a couple of weeks ago ( after my niece and mother in law got theirs and I didn't ) and just got mine today. The note in the box has a date of 11/9 , so looks like it just went out last week.

Yes it has downloadable readings, I dont have to software or a cable so have not tried that with any of the Lifescan products that I have.

I am getting a new computer for Christmas, so I may check into that then.

I want to thank you for posting this link, I have the ultra mini, but you never know when you need two, and since they use the same strips its right up my alley, to have one at work and at home and wont have to carry one all the time, since i generally only go to work and back home.........

I opted for the Ultra2 meter, and (if memory serves) it came with 10 "starter" strips. I'm sure that if you opted for the UltraSmart, it too would come with "starter" strips.

I have been pre-diabetic for a little while now.
My doctor suggested I get a meter. I got a free one thanks to the info on this forum.
My fasting results were 139 one morning; 143 the next morning; 121 the next morning. Doctor told me to test 1 or 2 times per week and it I got to 150 to call him for meds.
Since I'm so new to this; does this sound right to any or you?

The ULTRA 2 has a problem when downloading a "Logbook" report. The times are out of sic. Very frustrating. I spoke with Data Management. At first they thought I was nuts. However, they called me to say they are trying to correct the problem.
I suggest you use the "Ultra". Still the best!

Interestingly enough, I've been experimenting by using both and they are sometimes way off of each other, even when I use blood from the same finger. Has anyone done this experiment...they might be over 10 points off of each other...

What's the software issue? I'd like to know...will they be fixing it? I plan on using it exclusively after my next endo appointment.

asedai -- not a weird question at all. Check with your insurance coverage on strips. As an example, a person's insurance company might cover Onetouch and Accuchek brands. Other brands may be covered at a higher co-pay (or maybe not at all).

Some people find that their strips are covered under their DME provision (durable medical equipment). Others find that they are covere under the prescription provision.

The only way to find out is to look up your insurance company coverage. If it's under DME, it's likely that you can pick any brand. If it's prescription, you will probably desire to pick the lowest co-pay option (if that's how your plan works).

Some people's plans work as a percentage of the strips (e.g., 30% of the retail price). This is becoming more frequent, unfortunately -- they use the words, "Transparency in healthcare costs" to make it look like they're doing a favor to you. (While the executives make more $$$ for saving the stock holders money). If that's the case, you'd probably want to pick what saves you the most.

As you now know, it's different for everyone.

You can get an accurate measurement every time you have your blood drawn for basic chemistries.

The important thing is to track trends. Obviously, if you are at 200 mg/dl, it does not matter if you are 190 mg/dl or 210 mg/dl. It means you're high.

Just imagine what things would be like if we still used color strips. Those have big ranges and nobody worried about them!

Unfortunately, AFAIK, a 20% +/- discrepancy is considered acceptable, so if your "real" BG is 100, acceptable, industry-standard accuracy allows readings from 80-120. Yuk, but that's what we have right now. So 10 points may not really be "way off."

Another thing, if the blood stays on your finger for any length of time, it will drop in BG value ... something about the red blood cells continuing to gobble up the BG, so if you're quick it's fine, and if not, you may be possibly influencing some of the difference. YMMV, of course. --diana

I get a 1 meter a year paid by my insurance company. The strips that I use are up to me. Last year I changed meters 3 times looking for the meter I wanted, each time I ordered different strips, covered by my insurance.
