Guess I'll start with the introduction board ...

My husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last week. He knew it was only a matter of time, but thought it would be another 15-20 years before he heard those words! He is now coming to terms with the news ...

For the last year, hubby has been a runner; having started slowly when I talked him into going to the gym with me, he now runs 3-5 miles 5-7 times a week (mostly on the home treadmill, but sometimes on the road). We have also incorporated other types of exercises into our lives. He recently quit smoking, rarely drinks alcohol, and has been a vegetarian for more than 20 years. Our diet at home is quite healthy: loads of fresh fruits and veggies, "whole" foods, and all that healthy ****--we rarely use "processed" food.

So, you can imagine that we were taken a-back to hear the diagnosis! However, we are looking at small tweaks to our eating habits, and are not too concerned about everything. Mostly portion control and food "combinations" really. A meeting with the dietitian later this week will be a huge help in figuring everything out. (I'm sure this sounds naive, but we are being positive about all of this)

Anyhow, I don't know what I am hoping to get out of this forum, but imagine that I will do a lot of thread-searching for a while to get more information. We are pretty determined people, and are happy to change/alter our diets and routines so that WE are in control of this, rather than the condition controlling us.

Any great cookbook suggestions (veggie friendly) are appreciated!!

Looking forward to "meeting" everyone!!

Welcome to DF, lots of Fine Folks here.

btw, are you sure about the T2? Sounds like it could be T1.5 if he's been that healthy and eaten that well for a number of years.

Well, he's been a veggie for 20+ years, but hasn't had the best of diet for all of that. He's in his mid-40s, and we've been married for 1.5 years, so for that amount of time, he's eaten better than ever (I love to cook, and tend to cook healthy food).

He was first told he was "pre-diabetic" several years ago, and had always eaten loads of sweets and candies (and cheese/potato/egg based foods, loads of white bread and butter sort of meals). It's only recently that he's become Mr. Health; running, stopped smoking several weeks ago, eating quite well since we got married ...

However, I suppose it can't hurt to learn a bit more about 1.5, though his doctor didn't say anything about that ...

That's really more T2, although it's worth wondering about.

If you're already on a Vegan diet, there really isn't too much more you need to do except learn how to count and measure carbohydrates.

Except legumes, those you'll have to watch and learn how your husband reacts to those.
