Hey everyone,Im 16. Ive had diabetes for about 10 months now, and my first probably 8 months have been great. Last A1c was 6.1. Im usually active in footballl and bball at my school. But i have recently fractured my neck  !!! c5 vertebrae during a scrimmage at football. So with wearing a neck brace for 2 MONTHS (very lucky it wasnt worse) i havent had any activity in a long time. So ive been startin to take more insulin. But my diabetes is really started to act up now. Today after school i had a chicken salad sandwich, chips, milk and a brownie. I took 20 units!! I have never tooken that much insulin in one meal. So i thought i must be low. But it was at 101 just fine. Then i had some yogurt(no insulin) at dinner it was at 220. I took 20 units for 2 cheeseburgers and a baked potato. Checked about 2 hours later and was at 220!!!!!!! I took 9 more units and later it was at 269!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. WHATS GOIN ON?

oh yeah my carb ratio was 1unit of novalog to 15 carbs. My doc told me to up it to 2unit to 15. I hardly even waste the time counting carbs. I kinda just estimate. I know it sounds dumb but im almost always right on the money. But now, i dunno.

Are you taking any medications for the injury? Mainly any steroids?

There could be three issues here. The stress hormones your body is making because of the injury could be increasing your blood sugars. Insulin requirements also increase during puberty because of increased levels of sex hormones. And your insulin requirement could be increasing as your honeymoon wears off. Go easy on those carbs!

Until you heal, it may be easier to control your bg if you eat less carbs.

i agree with bluesky... it could be a number of things... stress, the injury and hormones, and as jedi says are you taking meds? all of it could be having a effect!
remember that diabetes takes time... sounds like a sappy thing to say but it's true. it doesn't always go right and a multitude of different things can effect it :) it's not a case of practice makes perfect!

Now I want a brownie, I think its a temporary thing, I reckon you shouldnt worry about it yet as stress will only make it worse. :ciao:

Besides what has been mentioned above......Let's not forget the fat content in the cheeseburgers! My BS always runs higher after 3 or 4 hours.

With a perfect bolus, your bg should return to target in about 4 hours.
