View Full Version : IF..........Are we screwed?

A short time ago a post was started that asked the question what we would do if stranded on an island.

With the world situation as it is and the new programs on TV like Jericho, etc. dealing with nuclear weapons and others dealing with natural disasters. IF... the worst would happen, are we screwed?

I know in the event of a large nuclear war diabetes would be the last of our worry but what about a conventional war or disaster that completly shuts down the economy/country and isolates communities for months? We can keep a month or two of supplies but what after that? How long will insulin keep? Is there a way to stockpile insulin for long term storage?

Just thinking aloud.

Insulin has an experation date. And once air meets it (using it the first time) the experation date is greatly increase. I think my vials I just got at home this week say something about 2008. So as long as they are refrigerated (well, kept away from heat) they should be good till 2008 unopened. Once opened depending on the type, it could last 30-90 days (maybe longer, never tried.)

Look at the New Orleans incident. Many people were abandoned at the convention center for days. Some of those got abandoned there with no medical supplies that they needed for daily living. The problem is, our country really doesn't know how to successfully deal with isolation. So if you needed supplies, you'd most likely have a hard time getting them or persuading people to give them to you.

It's an event I just hope doesn't happen.

I try so hard to not think negative of what could happen but lately it seems I'm on edge. If a major disaster were to strike (and I'm talking more then a natural disaster) and we were left with no supplies then at least when we die we wouldn't have to put up with the aftermath of the disaster. For some reason I'm nervous over the whole issue with Korea. It's like a scary movie and when I see them doing their march it freaks me out.

I'm working on the principle that in the event of a nuclear war, the radiation would mutate my pancreas back into action. That and the laser-firing eyes.

I like your attitude Deus. Let's just think the best "cause we can't do a thing about it. Seriiously, prepare any way you can--if your insurance let's you get by with it stock pile a little insulin. The expiration date allows that, but don't worry unnecessarily. Worry causes stress and causes high blood sugar.

Think good thoughts--which is hard to do with the Korea situation.

Nah...if there is a nuclear war with Korea, it'll last all of five minutes, result in Japan getting a bit screwed and there being a large smoking crater where Korea used to be. They can't deliver a nuclear weapon much further away than Alaska.

Dude, I really hope they can deliver it further--I would LOVE to see the laser-firing eyes. My kid would get a kick out of that as well.

Trying not to be political about all this, but, the current Administration in the U.S. is built on Threat. That's all they know, so the more people are frightened, the happier this bunch is.

If it comes, it comes.
I will sit under a tree
and read the stories that speak to me.

Hey! I'm afraid of everything this administration tells me to be afraid of: Terrorists (because any of us could die at any time at the hands of those people), Bird Flu (because it's going to be EVERYWHERE!), taxes (because I like my money), democrats (because they're softies)...

Actually, aren't all governments based on fear? Literally the only president the USA has had in recent memory who did not have a defined enemy to be feared was Bill Clinton, otherwise it was Nazis/Communists/the Spanish...

When I was a child, my parents bought my insulin and only kept one vial which I didn't have access to. Every time it ran out, I'm the one who got blamed for it. Needless to say, I just can't have enough now, so I keep as much as I can with limits being placed on my by the expiration date, just in case there should be none available. Of course, I don't know how I would keep it cold. I was thinking of perhaps using the pool inside a nearby cave as a sort of fridge but that would depend on if others were using it, too. It is my hope that it would last long enough for me to find some other way of getting it, perhaps by making it myself, although that would mean taking the lives of animals which I'd have a hard time with. Of course, I don't know how to make it but I figure the first ones who made insulin didn't either, so perhaps I could go through the same learning process that they did.

Well, how'd I do that? I sat here for the longest time waiting for it to post and it never did so I just logged off the computer, thinking I'd try again later. Sorry about that.

Not that anyone wanted to be political, but all of a sudden we are. Looks like that should be down someplace else, like the section for people who want to talk about other things besides diabetes--not the Type I section.
