The last three nights I have woken up with nypos, bgs reading 3.0 mmol/l or lower, and have a terrible time getting them back to a decent level. My bed time bgs have been good (around 7 or 8 mmol/l), so its not as though I am going to bed low, or even anywhere near there.

I'm thinking its time to drop the Lantus dose a little, but would really like some opinions...

Thanks,

Katie

Are you still not eating and not bolusing? If I were you, knowing that you have so many problems with DKA, I would be trying to fit in a snack before bed rather than trying to cut down any more on insulin. Especially if you are likely to be going on a pump pretty soon, I'd just deal with the lows with preventative food rather than risk going into DKA and having to wait even longer for approval for the pump. I'd normally never suggest eating to match your insulin rather than the other way around, but in your case...

When I had that problem they told me to eat a snack at night that contained 15 grams of carbs and 1 oz of protein. The only problem with that was I stared having problems of being too high in the morning. It was a balancing act that I never mastered.
Since that time I've learned that for me an ounce of protein will really stabalize the bs over night, without a rise. I'm convinced that everything about this silly disease is really an individual thing.
You could experiment with it and see what results you get, but if that doesn't work you may have to lower the Lantus dose.

You could be dropping in the middle of the night cause of the Lantus..This used to happen to me when i was first on it...I would walk up shakey...I would eat something before bed first and if you wake up too high then i would just lower the dosage.

I, recently, had to drop my Lantus dosage. But, my situation was because I was a little more active and eating a little bit less during the day. I went from 37 to 32 units and haven't had the night scares like I used to. My wife is thankful for that, too. So far, so good!

YOU MUST ALWAYS HAVE A SNACK BEFORE GOING TO BED. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A SNACK, YOU WILL CERTAINLY HAVE HYPOS.

YOU MUST NOT ADJUST YOUR BASALS UNTIL YOU ARE NOT SICK AND HAVE RECOVERED SUFFICIENTLY TO CAREFULLY TEST YOUR BASAL READING FOR AT LEAST THREE DAYS IN A ROW.

I hate feeding the insulin!

When I was taking Lantus, I would have night time lows. First I tried eating protein/fat snacks. Perhaps a slice or two of cheese and lunchmeat.

Eventually I spoke with my endo and he suggested moving my Lantus to morning injections and that helped tremendously. Good luck...

It didn't last long, as I moved to the pump very soon afterwards. Several people on the forum split their Lantus dose, taking some in the morning and some in the evening....

Thanks Cyborg...

I'm due to see the Endo soon anyway, I guess I'll give her a call...

Ok, I have to ask this as this just bugs me....did you mean to type Hypo or is there a reason this thread is titled "Nypos"?

Katie, I have split my Lantus dose and done very well with it.
As to the title, Nypos, mis-spelling or not, I think it's a neat name to refer to night time hypos.
Night + hypos = Nypos:)
