View Full Version : Diabetes Forum Gathering

During the chat tonight we started talking about having a gathering of Diabetes Forum members. This will be a huge undertaking, but I believe there are a few of us that don't mind taking the time to plan it.

The poll is very basic and I wanted to get it covered in one poll as much as possible to show interest level. There will be many factors to plan such as....

Who: Everyone on here and their family are invited.
What: A gathering of fellow diabetics.
Where: That is the major factor, however, since alot of US people are planning it, it would definitely be in the US.
When: We are thinking summer of 2007, since most families plan vacations then anyways and because school is out so children and young diabetic members can come.
Why: Because quite a few of us want to meet in person but don't have the motivation to drive/fly to meet just one person.

There are some factors one would have to consider when attending. That includes cost to fly or drive there and that may be the main factor. Realize though, that from Cincinnati a plane ticket to Vegas is the same as Orlando.

We would plan on staying at the same hotel and working on a group discount, which that would be determined during the time we go.

We could possibly also work on a common T-Shirt to wear and maybe even find a local hall to rent for a day and get some diabetic companies to come out. With a car site I use to belong to we had GM make speeches and some other companies come to the event for demonstrations.

Either St. Augustine, FL, or Las Vegas, Nevada. There's stuff for kids to do in Vegas....anyone ever hear of "Circus Circus" (it has a mid-way for kids) or the New York hotel (that has rides and gaming areas)?

St. Augustine is much nicer than Orlando (no offense, Cyborg) as it's not as much of a tourist trap in terms of ridiculous prices.

The down-side to this is, Jedi....we've talked about gatherings for about 2 years now. Nothing has come to fruition as of yet....It would be nice, but a big issue is that some cannot take the time off from work, or other life situations hinder their chances of gathering (finances, etc.).

That said, I opt more for St. Augustine than I do Vegas, but Vegas is my second choice....that is, If something comes to fruition......

I also think, that since Tony is owner/admin, he should have some say in all this....don't ya think?

The problem is alot of stuff in Vegas costs alot of money. Not everything, but 99% of the shows do and some of the rides are just ridiculous in price. Vegas was my first choice as well, I guess I'd like to hear from a parent that has taken a kid there if there was enough to do. This is all assuming kids would go (well, anyone under 21.)

The down-side to this is, Jedi....we've talked about gatherings for about 2 years now. Nothing has come to fruition as of yet....It would be nice, but a big issue is that some cannot take the time off from work, or other life situations hinder their chances of gathering (finances, etc.).

I know, I know. I'm the one that brought it up last year, not sure who the year before. THat's also why I'm trying to bring it up now, so people can plan to take off of work.

I use to belong to a car forum that had a gathering every year. And for that it was even harder to get people since they purpose was to take your car, which meant you had to drive. We had about 1000 members on that board, and about a 30-40 car turnout, which I think was great.

That's why I understand some can't get off work, but, if we have dates planned by the end of this year, 6 months notice should be plenty of time to take off work with vacation time. I'm not looking for a 100% turnout. Heck, I'd be happy if 10 members showed up and got to meet.

I also think, that since Tony is owner/admin, he should have some say in all this....don't ya think?

I agree he should have some say. But right now it's just to get interest. Then when it comes later on to planning and registering, then we'll ask him to use the forum name and produce shirts (maybe have a design contest as well.)

Again, I'm Not trying to argue, but prices for DisneyWorld & Orlando area attractions are Not cheap, by any means. In fact, last time we considered going, it was like $50 a person or so (& that was a couple of years ago).

Some may be closer to the Vegas area, too, such as Koblenz & BriOnH, so it may just be that we'd have to form "multiple, regional" gatherings or something.

I'd Love to go to St. Augustine, but am not big on the idea of Orlando...St. Augustine has fun things for children to see & do, too.

As for kids in Vegas there are many things to do for free there and kids are a big attraction. Not only Circus Circus but Excaliber has a kids floor, there are many free shows (treasure Island, the fountains at Bellagio, Cesaers and the Forum....just to name a few....) that would keep kids entertained. Oh forgot to mention....Venician and all the traveling performers in there....very kid oriented....

The gathering would probably last for a week. If it were in Vegas it would most likely go from a Sunday to a Friday skipping Friday and Saturday nights since hotel rates skyrocket the during pretty much all times of the year. If the group is large enough we could probably get $10-$20 off per night per room (for something like a $75 per night room) if booked long enough in advance, which is why I'm trying to plan it now. Also, nobody would be required to stay the entire time. If someone just wants to do 3 nights, that's fine by me.

The idea with Vegas also allows for a group discounts for shows and the same applies to Disney World. I tried finding what the amount for discounts is but I can't find it online right now.

Not everyone would need to come, but we would greatly appreciate everyone. I understand with a forum of 4800+ members, some that join asking for financial assistance, that we all can't go. But for those that can, it may persuade some more to meet others if they have the time they can take off work. Like me, I get 12 vacation days a year right now, and I'm sure there are others out there like that, so taking 4 days off isn't a big deal.

That is also one reason this would need to be in the summer. Some people have school (college) that they don't want to miss and I don't want them to miss. THere's also some kids on here (main one that comes to my mind is Eri) that I would love to meet (assuming ER can schedule ER trips around us, lol.)

Right now it seems like Las Vegas and Niagara Falls are winning, so I'll do some research over the next few days for cheaper weeks to go there and some activities to do. I had some co-workers that just went to Vegas a month ago and the most any of them paid for a round trip ticket from Indy to Vegas was $300 and I know quite a few picked up the ticket for $211. But of course, buying a plane ticket is just as hard as gambling.

I think Stuboy made a good point. Perhaps doing area "meet & greets" may work better for some? This way, people wouldn't have to travel so far if they can't afford it or don't have the time...

Another thing is that we don't necessarily have to go to shows in Vegas. Some aren't into that type of stuff, and would rather just go shopping, walk, go swimming, or to a spa or do other activities...maybe going to a big dinner together would work better (of course, some shows provide dinner, but depending on the layout of the place, they may have to split parties up)...

By the way, Brian, I'd play Mini golf with ya, but not regular, LOL! ;)

These are just thoughts that I was having.

Also, perhaps you should do another poll Jedi, & add St. Augustine. It seems like some members are interested in going there, and prices for that area aren't outrageous. There's plenty of beauty, history & fun to be seen & had while there as well. We could also swim over at Vilano Beach, which is just a couple of miles away. Heck, even if we do multiple "meet & greets," and opt for Vegas one time, and St. Augustine for the next, I'd likely go to both! :)

Again, I'd also like to hear what Tony also has in terms of thoughts on this & if he has any suggestions of where to gather, or other input...

A return flight (excluding taxes) from Heathrow to Las Vegas costs around £400-500 ($800). That's for November - in August it's nearer £750 ($1500)

That doesn't include accommodation either.

Incidentally I'm not sure what your financial situation but £400 is certainly not something I could outlay just like that.

Yeah, I went around August 20th, 2003 for a full week. Upon arrival and landing, the pilot told us the weather conditions and said it was a "scorching 105." I thought that would be hot, however, with ZERO humidity, that is a **** of a lot better than 80 degrees with 80% humidity. Not to mention, most stuff you do in Vegas is indoors and just traveling 5-10 minutes outside isn't that bad. Unless you want to play Brian and Dewey in Mini-golf.

What's the temperature in Florida in August? That has to be in the 80s still down there.

I am also sending a PM to Tony to see if we can get a gathering subforum set up.

Also, Dewey, could you explain some items to do down in St. Augustine?

Also, Dewey, could you explain some items to do down in St. Augustine?

Some things/points of interest in St. Augustine are:

1. Lightner Museum (beautiful museum full of art & informative history, set in an old hotel). Has a food area & shops inside what used to be the old swimming pool. Nice place to check out & not expensive (Admission: Adults, $8; Children 12-18, $2; Children under 12, free).

the pool now (with a concert going on)

2. Castillo de San Marcos - a beautiful fort made from coquina shells (Prices $6.00 adults. Children 15 & under - free). You may also get discounts or deals if you go on a tour of St. Augustine.
http://math.feld.cvut.cz/habala/pics/trip13g.jpg

3. Spanish Military Hospital on Aviles Street. Really cool & interesting facts on the history of medicine & old procedures. Not sure on price, would have to call...
http://p.vtourist.com/734644-Military_hospital-Saint_Augustine.jpg

There are lots of other attractions (Ripley's Believe It Or Not, Fountain of Youth, Wax Museum and the Old Jail, to name a few, but it really would depend on what people wanted to do). There's a comedy house, countless restaurants, bed & breakfasts, shops & more...(and yes, even golf! LOL) If anyone wants links to area attractions for more info., feel free to PM. :)

Is everything within walking distance down there? Or do the have a cheep commuting method? One reason I put both Vegas and Disney World on the list is you can get around the entire place with no vehicle. Which would be great for those flying in. For example, in Vegas, you can get a bus pass for one week for $10 per person and that takes you up and down the strip unlimited times during that week and even up to Freemont Street. Although, walking the strip isn't that bad.

Most things are within walking distance, but they also now have free shuttles (i.e. from the parking lot) as well as the tours, which aren't outrageous in price, either.

However, most of what I described Is within walking distance. Every time I go, I go down St. George Street to duck in shops if it's hot & then continue on my way till we get where we're going.

The Spanish Military Hospital is several blocks, as is the Lightner Museum, but both of those are in walking distance, as well as Castillo de San Marcos (which is even closer to parking, if spaces aren't available in the lot at the fort itself). Ripley's is just about a block away from the fort, and restaurants line some of the streets.

Click on Hybrid to see where the Fort and other roads & things are.

Here's a map that shows attractions as well...You may want to copy & paste the pic into paint or something, and save it. You can then zoom in on it to see things better. It also takes a little to load, so be patient:

The car forum I belonged to had one and it was great. I however never got to attend it and was not a planner, but there were some other reasons in that as well. LOL...

I just hope we can pull something off because one....I need a vacation desperately, lol. Two, I have vacation days to use next year (10 must be used.) Three, I want to meet others on here, but don't want to drive 3 hours to meet one person, I want to meet like 5-10 at least. Four, I'm sure others are that way too.

I see great success if one large one happened and possibly even getting Abbott, Lifescan, Animas, Minimed, Deltic-Smith, etc, etc. to come out if the turnout was large. And we know if they came, they might bring free samples (sorry, no free pumps though, lol.)

But if one large one doesn't work, many smaller ones will.

How bout that cruise I wanted many moons ago? And we won't have to worry about not having backup supplies. Sandi, if you pump breaks, I'll let you borrow mine every hour.

One thing I was looking at for a location was a possible meeting room and trying to get companies to come out and talk to us. Maybe even get some of the new pump companies to come out and speak. I'd love to see an Omnipod in person. Then maybe I could get Lifescan to come and give something out for free once in their life, lol.

So the search continues.

We should see how many people would actually even go to a gathering first before picking places and dates. Once we have that establish then we all can agree on a location, time of year and for how long. If we are going to plan something we should go all the way to make this a big event.

I would be interested in going, but for example lets say you choose some time in the winter then I would not be able to go, even though I am seriously interested in going there is no way I can get away then. So I think it is important that we find how many people are serious about going and then as group we can focus on the rest and make this a team effort. I think we will have a bigger turn out this way.

In the previous attempts to organize a get together, I will give my same response:

1. I'm in!
2. I will start researching bail bondsmen in the proposed destinations (I have a feeling we will need them!)
3. My location preferences in order: Dew's house, Cin's house, Tony's house, Vegas
4. I am sure we can get some reps from companies to come out and speak
5. We need prizes for various things: Farthest distance traveled, Lowest BS while on the trip, highest BS after a buffet (assuming Vegas), Best airport security checkin story, Person with most backup supplies, Person with least backup supplies, etc.

Tony, I thought that too, but the problem is you'll get great interest for the event but might not get an interest for location. I believe the interest is there on this forum. It's just getting it together that seems to fall through and finding a location where the greatest turnout would be.

I'm one that is willing to fly most places. However, I don't think someone like Funnygrl woudl want to fly to Vegas or Florida, however, if it were in NY, she'd be 100% about going. So that's where the problem is with getting interest first.

Also Tony, if you want, you can close all of these threads and start it out how you think it should start. I just remeber from my car forum that there was huge interest for a Rally, but once it was about choosing locations over 75% dropped out due to traveling that far. So then the idea of numerous mini-Rallies came about but didn't succeed very well since the main support group did the Ohio location, so the NY, Florida, and California one never went through.

I'm just really into getting this to happen and will put all my effort into it to make sure something happens.

Love the list and one idea I have if it's large enough is to get a meeting hall for an afternnon to do #4 and 5. Get reps out and also get some gifts from sponsors to give out as either raffle prizes or something crazy like you said. Maybe one for the woman that brings the most pairs of shoes on a 5 day trip? LOL

Maybe we could go to West Chester, PA and see how the Animas Insulin pump is made?

I'll research PA law then and see if I need a bounty hunter license. Then I'll go get a 2 liter bottle of OC spray and grow my hair out. Cool huh? **** no.

Personally, I don't care much either. I just want to meet others, but alot at a time. And the whole thing wouldn't be devoted to diabetes. If anything, just a few hours so we can get some free stuff and seeing new products. Not that I need anymore free stuff as my cabinets are loaded with it now. Free strips and insulin would be nice though.

Actually, a cruise ship would be about $400 per person assuming we get it worked out to two in every room. Then you jsut have to get to the port somehow. And in that money all your food and entertainment is included. Maybe someone that's been on a cruise or five could better answer that than me.

What's that called Jedi when someone steals something worth $5000+? Isn't that more then just a petty theft?

Here is the breakdown on thefts, and this is Ohio law...

$0-$499 -- Petty Theft (City or State Level)
$500-$4999 -- Felony Theft (State Level)
$5000+ -- Grand Larceny (may be punished at state level or federal level)

Yet for some reason stealing $6000 cash from someone is more of a crime than stealing their $80,000 Lamborghini. :hmmmm2:

For what kind of cruise and for how long?

4 days, something like 3 ports, inside cabin (no windows), and I think all cruise lines have those. I think port tax or whatever it's called is extra, but if one doesn't want off the boat they don't have to leave.

I'm not a cruise person, so I'm probably the last one should ask. I just did quite a bit of research a few months back for bottom line cruises.

Oh man....The Keys are gorgeous! I'd love to go back, but the problem is it could be too far for some. Plus, even though there are shops there & such, the only things I can remember for kids (granted, last time I went was 1990 :(), was Dolphins Plus in Key Largo. I'm not sure if they're still there or not, either.

Granted, it is beautiful, but it may be too far for some....:dontknow:

There's swimming, camping, fishing, hiking, boating all for the kids. Then if you go at the right time of the year, there are festivals and other events. For the adults, the night life can be pretty fun, depending on which key... I'm planning a trip to the keys around April, since that's when the sailfish run best...

Are you saying Me and Spike couldn't share a room together? We'd both come out alive and return home safely.

I think part of the D-Life cruise was they were having speakers and such, and the people going on the cruise were paying for the rooms of those speakers and were paying for meeting space and such. So an added cost there.

Oh, and Sandi, on the toothpaste thing, I buy the cheapest Crest toothpaste I can find and then throw a coupon on that, so yours is probably ten times better, lol.
