View Full Version : BGs gone wacky

My BG has been running high since Saturday morning. Early Saturday it was fine but by late morning it started to go up. I kept it down during the afternoon by doing a lot of walking but by early evening it started going much higher. Corrections did almost nothing. I got home around 8pm Saturday with a BG of 267. I corrected (via pump) and then fell asleep, because I was exhaused (didn't go to sleep Friday night). When I woke around 11pm my BG hadn't budged so I changed everything. Cannula, tubing, reservoir, vial of insulin. First I corrected with a syringe, just in case. Fell asleep again and woke at 4am, my BG was pretty much the same. Corrected, fell asleep, 8am still high.

I set a temp basal rate for 24 hours at 200%, doubling all of my basals. I had breakfast around 10am and went high and higher afterward. I doubled my lunch bolus (plain yogurt, some frozen berries & a Tbsp of wheat germ) and went for a brisk walk. Afterward I did drop to 56, but on a normal day a double basal, double bolus and a walk immediately after eating would have me unconscious in no time. I kept it down by going for another walk and was 89 before dinner at 7:15. I bolused 50% more for dinner and was 148 after. Higher than normal but at least it wasn't 200+. I had some frozen yogurt at 10pm and did a double bolus for it. I just tested and I'm 89 again.

I'm not sick, I have not recently been sick, I'm not taking any new medications, nothing in my routine has changed. There is no reason I can see why this is happening, and why it came on so suddenly.

I'm afraid to go to sleep with my basals doubled in case my body decides to stop teasing me and returns to normal. I don't know if I should lower the basals, maybe to 150%, or just set the alarm to wake every hour or two to check my BG.

Sounds like you might be coming down with something. Be careful upping your bolus too much while you sleep. I rarely do that myself. Hope you feel better soon...

Oh, BTW, it is that time of the month?

I'm also wary of keeping my basal high but it's very frustrating to keep waking up with high numbers that don't seem to respond to a correction. I'm going to wait another two hours or, which will put me 4+ hours after my last bolus, and see where I am there. Depending on the number I'll either stick with the double basal or lower it. Either way, I plan on waking up a few times to test. I'm tempted to just stay up all night but I did that Friday, and was up so many times last night, that I think I'll end up crashing at work from exhaustion.

And no, it's not that time of the month and I'm one of the lucky (?) women whose BGs were never affected by it anyway.

I would say you are either coming down with something or.....

How long has that vial of insulin been opened? Where did you get it from? What's the expiration date on it?

My BG stayed down after dinner last night, with the doubled basal and extra bolus. I was 148 2 hours after dinner and decided it might be safe to have some frozen yogurt. The pump recommended 1 unit for 24g of carbs and I bolused 2. Midnight I was 89, 1:30am dropped to 57. I cancelled the temp basal rate and decided to have some more frozen yogurt (I just got an ice cream maker, and this was my first attempt - very good!) and I did bolus the 1.0 unit for it. An hour later I was 94; 3 hours after that last yogurt I was 144. I took a small .4 unit correction, just because I was paranoid my BG was creeping up again. 2 hours later I was 102, an hour later at 7:40 I was the same.

So, I ate breakfast and took the recommended bolus. Hopefully I'll be within range when I do my 2 hour test. I don't know what was going on for the previous 2 days but I hope it's finished.

The vial I was using first would have been less than a month old. Don't recall the expiration date but I know it was good. That was the last vial I had gotten at the local pharmacy. When I changed everything out I opened the first of 9 vials I got through Caremark's mail order pharmacy. They had arrived well insulated, with the ice packs still frozen almost solid.

This is a strange disease. It's possible your insulin requirements have changed and it's possible the insulin you're using has gone bad. I've had the insulin go bad a few times.

My BGs seem fine today, so far at least. Around 2am things seemed to revert back to normal. Very, very odd. I was pretty sure it wasn't the insulin since the first reservoir I had in was working perfectly until late Saturday morning, and a second reservoir with a brand new vial of insulin still wasn't working.

I didn't go to bed last night because I was afraid to fall asleep with the temp basal rate running, and I was also afraid to cancel it and fall asleep because I didn't want to wake up sky high.
