Major Gusher

I'm not having too much luck here. Out of my last 3 sets, 2 were bad. This morning a put a new set in and it hurt. It was sensitive all morning. At lunch, I noticed my bg rising even though I had not eaten yet. So I threw my lunch in the fridge and came home to change out the set.

OMG.... When I pulled the set off, blood starting gushing out like never before. Within a second I soaked the IV Prep pad. I immediately grabbed a towel as blood was literally pouring out and running down my side. After getting the bleeding to stop and upon inspection, the cannula wasn't bent. I must have hit a vein or something. :eek:

I've had times like that before and those are the times I really reconsider pumping. Not the gusher part, but having numerous bad sets in a row. Hang in there, just make sure you don't get blood on the carpet or the wife might kill ya.

My first insertion was not good all pain and no gain I posted about it here. There was pain in every bolus and even a basal rate.

Nice mark on insertion site for a awhile.

Orthopedic Shoes for diabetics and when they are an integral part of a covered brace are covered.

The following applies to ALL Durable Medical Equipment, including wigs: If more than one piece of Durable Medical Equipment can meet the functional need, benefits are available only for the most cost-effective piece of equipment. Growth Hormones and all self-injectables are covered if administered in a physician's office.

Benefits are provided for the replacement of a type of Durable Medical Equipment once every 3 calendar years.

Care Coordination will decide if the equipment should be purchased or rented. You must purchase or rent the Durable Medical Equipment from the vendor Care Coordination identifies.


Also they denied my Pump Claim soley for no pre-authorization sole reason now. I'm in a second level appeal.

Sorry you are having so many problems with UHC... They annoyed the heck out of me more than once.

I won't quote the whole paragraph, but here's the relevant excerpt from my docs. Remember, this was on the next page and could easily be overlooked:

The calendar year limit shown above does not apply to Durable Medical Equipment under Diabetes Treatment.

If fact, I had to go a few rounds with them to get them to agree. Kinda senseless for health care to cover only a pump and not the parts needed to use the pump. Doh...

Sorry to hear about your gusher! I had a good one a bit ago, while I was showing a curious friend how my pump works and what I have to do with it. HA HA!! The look on her face was worth the gush:- I now appear very brave. But I think diabetics have an odd sense of humor, because she did not find it funny:dontknow:

I've only had one in the past... yeah, it was pretty gross and calling it a gusher isn't an exaggeration :eek:.

I've had 2 gushers in 18 months, not too bad. However, both times occured on my right abdomen. I had good readings on both times.

The first time I didn't even realize that I was bleeding until my shirt felt VERY wet.

Well, I've now got one heck of a quarter sized bruise where the set was before removing it...

For routine injection stabbings that cause a bruise/hematoma I found that salicylate creams like aspercream etc help clear the purple blotch a little quicker. I think it acts as a local thinner. Still ugly, though.
