I got my pump by ups today! :marchmell (Animas 1250)
Talked to the trainer and she is contacting my doctor to see when he wants me to start.
In the mean time is it ok to get used to the pump?
I am not going to pump insulin with it until I get trained.
I was thinking about using the pump for logging and bolus calculations and things like that.

Play with it all you want. Set the date, time, alarms, etc. Then if you want, just put an empty cartridge in to get use to doing that part. I'd just refrain against putting an infusion set in and connecting it ot you if this is your first pump. As for the rest, go for it.

What Jedi said.
Play with it to get familar. read the manuals until all is clear. watch the DVD a few times, if necessary. get to know your pump backwards and forwards
HAPPY DANCE!!! Welcome to pumping!

When I got mine, I 'shadowed' my MDI. I entered by BG reading and compared its bolus to what I figured. Before I went to training, I reset it back to factory defaults so I didn't mess with the 'real' programming. I waited about a week between when it arrived and when we started. I had a friend with the same pump, so he helped me with lots of questions.

FrankDr you read my mind.
I was actually thinking about shadowing my mdi until I start.
Might even be able to learn something.
This pump is pretty much self explanitory to me as far as its standard electronic use.
Anyone know how to set the 1250 back to factory defaults?
I did not notice anthing about doing that in the manual.

I don't think resetting it is important. I know the mm pump I have came in a mode set for playing. They tell you to do that. Is there an online school for your pump? Check the web site. The manual that came with mine had lessons for you to do before your training. Did you get a CD with it? It's also designed to view before you're training. It should walk you through the steps - show a lesson, then give you time to do the same thing with your pump. My trainer also told me to play with it until the training date arrived. So go for it!

I dont think Anumas has an online school although they do have an online pump to play with.
The training dvd was the first thing out of the box upon delivery.
Watched it one time and completely understood everything.
The first time set insertion has me a little nervous since I dont know what to expect.
My endo sent me my starting doses earlier today. I already have them programmed in. (took all of 1 minute).
I did complete mm's online pump school and thought it was very easy.
Now I just have to wait for the Animas trainer.

I was also very concerned about the first set insertion. My hands were shaking, which made it a bit more difficult! But ... after 4 whole set changes I can tell you there's nothing to it. You have an inserter? I'm amazed at how easy it is. And I'm a weinie!

I am going to start with insets.
They are supposed to have an inserter built into them.

Might even be able to learn something.
This pump is pretty much self explanitory to me as far as its standard electronic use.
You can also test out various situations that you wouldn't want to do 'live' to see how the pump reacts to various BG and Bolus combinations. Oh yes, the Walsh book "Pumping Insulin" is like the 'real world' instruction manual for any pump user. It's a lot at first, but after a few times through and putting the steps to use, it will make more sense.
and BTW, pumping at first may feel like a step backwards, numbers wise, but give it time. It took me about 3 or 4 weeks to feel like I was in control and felt comfortable with the results.

I am truly gratefully for all the assistance I received so far from this forum.
With the help of all the great people and information on here I was able to make a massive difference on my a1c 8.9+ to my best ever and current 6.2.
I went from knowing very little about what was going on and just getting by with R and NPH and testing only 2x a day and thinking it was enough to MDI with Huma/Novo-log and Levemir and testing 5-6 or more times a day and very soon to a pump.
I feel that if I had only found the great people and information on here sooner I probably would have made much more progress with my diabetes years ago sparing myself the complications I am currently suffering.
For years I was seeing a doctor who will remain nameless who kept telling me I was doing good (yeah right) and I believed this doctor and I didn't know any better.
To everyone on here who directly or indirectly influenced my new found knowledge and interest in my health and pretty much saved my life I would like to give a huge thank you.

Hi Mids, my Animas 1250 is arriving on Fri. I met with my trainer on Mon. and inserted my first Inset. I didn't feel a thing! I next meet with the trainer on Nov. 2nd and will do the saline for a couple days, she gave me the choice on doing it or not and I chose to. I want to feel really comfortable with the whole thing before I start with insulin. She said to play with the pump ALOT. I totally agree with you about this board being such a help.

Mids,
Congrats on your pump arriving! I hope you have a long and happy partnership with it. Playing with the pump ahead of time is a very good thing. When I started back in February, the folks here encouraged me to carry it in pocket and push the buttons for meals and corrections before I actually started with it. That made a world of difference in my comfort level when I actually "hooked up live".
I even sacrificed a couple sets before going live - first by inserting one into a chair cushion to just see how it worked, and then several unnecessary set changes while on saline, just so I could feel comfortable that I knew how to do it and how it should work. Good luck in your new adventure!
And Lizzy, best wishes on your new pump too!
cheers,
j
