Hi,

I've been having intense unquenchable thirst and constant peeing (at least once an hour) for several months. These last few days my mouth has become unbearably cotton-mouthy. Lots of energy so it hasn't interfered too much with daily life. But someone mentioned diabetes symptoms and it really registered. Now as I look online at the profile, it really frightens me.

I'm 44, don't really exercise, weigh 155 (and I seem to be gaining and craving food all the time.) My mother has it and my dad died of it (from alcohol abuse.)

I plan to go into the doctor first thing (if they take a walk-in) but what do I need to know - should I not eat in the morning? What should I expect from a test? How soon will they tell me definitively. If my test was high, what would immediate treatment be?

Thanks!

fearfully,

S

If I were you, and my doctors wouldn't take me as a walk in, I'd be heading straight to the ER, especially with the family history you have.
Refraining from eating in the morning may be a good idea, but please keep up the water!
All I can say now is Good Luck, and if the diagnosis is positive, there are always lots of friendly people around here to lend an ear, a shoulder, or a friendly word.

Go straight to the hospital!

Don't deny your thirst, drink lots of water and when you get to the hospital, tell them you suspect you might be diabetic because of your symptoms. They should take this very seriously. By the sounds of things your blood sugar reading will be very high and they will treat you straight away. They will probably put you on a Salyne(sp) drip to bring your sugar levels down. Ask you to pee in a pot to test for ketones and eventually they'll put you on an insulin IV untill your levels stabalise. Then they'll tell you about diabetes and give you a meter and an insulin pen (if your type 1) and talk you through your insulin treatment.

This is what happened to me anyway! I had exessive thirst and peeing, also felt tired all the time too.

It's ok to be scared, but you will feel MUCH better the moment they start treating you.

Welcome to the forum. Great people and tons of information to be found here.

I'd call my doctor and if he can't see you today, head to a walk-in clinic or ER. Good luck!

Welcome to the family..:tee: Keep drinking lots of water. And yes, get yourself to the Dr. either walkin or ER. Sounds like you need to go NOW. The sooner the better. Good Luck. and keep us informed whatever the outcome is. There is lots of good info here. I am still learning something just about every day.

Stu, here's me correcting you... silly billy!
YES, for dehydration an IV will most likely be inserted, but thats all Saline will do, rehydrate. Only meds will bring the bgs down...

Depending entirely on the results of the tests undertaken, you may OR MAY NOT be given insulin therapy. Please don't panic, your bgs will go higher, if that is indeed the problem at all.

Also, I'm sure they are far more likely to do a blood ketone test? It is far more accurate that urinary ketones...

Anyway, again, good luck... please keep us updated.

I just came back from the doc's office - nothing weird about my pee, so I'm probably fine (or it's something else.) They took 2 tubes of blood - not sure what exactly they were for. I've had a few irregular tests before during check-ups (kidney, sugar) but nothing that occurred twice. They thought perhaps I was just dehydrated.

I don't know what else could be causing such intense cotton mouth - maybe the fake sugar I've been using (stevia).

Anyway, you were all so nice. And it's a wake-up call to start exercising more.

Thanks,

S

P.S. This actually inspired me to get more information about diabetes for my mother who is not taking care of herself very well. So it's a good thing.

ahhh i see... i didn't really know what the saline was, i just know i had it lol. I just said what happened to me...

Excercising more wont nessassarily(sp) stop you having diabetes... i was a regular excersiser before diagnosis... it was in the gym that i first noticed a decline in performance!! Oh, and if you're pee is fine... that just means there are no ketones (i think that's all they test for?) it doesn't mean you dont have diabetes.

I only say this so you dont get your hopes up too soon and be let down only to find out you do have diabetes, I suspect one of the blood tests they will run is an HbA1c.

Good luck tho!
