Hello MYDEAR,

What you are experiencing sounds like Dawn Phenomenon or the Somogyi effect.

A search on Google "dawn phenomenon somogyi" will turn up about 11,000 documents, e.g., Dawn phenomenon and the Somogyi effect on Yahoo! Health (http://health.yahoo.com/ency/healthwise/tk3380) which explains it.

Good luck.
Regards,
Shamsul

Its a very frustrating issue. I tried it all and only when I was able to get on a pump was I able to stop this.

I had this problem every morning when I was on oral meds only,I tried allsorts to solve it but nothing worked. It had a knock on effect through most of the day,my numbers would just start to come down then it was meal time again. Two weeks ago I went on insulin and now have great numbers.

Lately I wake up and about an hour after being up, I check myself befor eI eat, and Ive been averaging 190+ in the morning.

Early evening, I'm back to averaging 140.

I think insulin is going to be part of my life soon, but I was hoping somone here had something to help with this morning high before that happens

I would be happy with anything from 100-140. Sometimes its a little higher but everyday is different, what works one day may not always work the next, especially in the morning for me anyways.

So many things effect our levels. I went to bed last night at 109, after having a small piece of cheese, woke before 4 at 236. Not feeling too good, right now, so that is probably why I have the high number. All this week, I have had fasting numbers of 120 or less, just when I was feeling good about it, I have a 236! I am on Lantus and Novolog.

good morning everybody

i found out that there are three main causes of high morning fasting bg: Insufficient insulin
Dawn phenomenon
Somogyi effect (aka rebound).

so far i know my highs aren't from insufficient insulin, because this summer when my numbers were out of control (400's) during the day (Bad Diet)/ with morning highs over 200. my Dr. stopped metformin and put me on 5 mg of glyburide. now, since i'm low carbing and watching what i eat, my numbers are getting tooooo low during the day. so this week i've been only taking 1/2 the glyburide (2.5 mg). now my numbers are a little high before bed,( from 89 to 104) but..... lower when i get up (from 150 to 137).

anyway... that's proof to me that it's not that i'm not taking enough meds.

so for a couple of nites i'm going to check my numbers to see if it's because my blood sugar is going to low while i'm sleep, (the Somogyi effect) or if it's from my blood sugar rising just before i get up, ( the Dawn phenomenon) which i'm begining to understand is normal ( meaning that even some non-diabetes have a rise in there numbers in the early morning.

i'll keep you guys posted on my research
