I must get that question once a week, and to be honest it both makes me laugh and annoys the **** out of me. Most of the time I shrug and say stick around and lets see, it could be fun for everyone.
Does everyone else get some silly questions like that and how do you normally respond?

I get it alot. I stole this line from someone's sig... but I always say

"I can eat anything except plastic and brussel sprouts"

I get it sometimes, not a lot though... mostly people at work offering me sweets and jam filled sugar coated doughnuts... THAT annoys me.

Well, it isn't a question, but so far my favorite was going hypo at the dentist's and having the techie offer me some table sugar!

grace girl - haha, sometimes if I'm low at a restaurant and waiting for my order I'll sit and eat the sugar packets. Mmm sugar.

So then they said to you," Just paw the carpet once for each sugar cube you want."

Yes I get it! For future reference, let them always be referred to as FOOD NAZIS.

I had a great one just a few weeks ago!
I love to bake, and my friend had just had a little girl, so, at Molly's welcome supper I baked a white chocolate and raspberry swirl cake. As I was placing it and a knife on the table, I was asked by a rather large (I'm talking 4 times my size) guy I know "should you be eating that?". I looked him up and down, explained that I was serving it, not gobbling, and as he cut himself a huge chunk said "and anyway... should YOU be eating that?!".

I wasn't popular with him for it, but i say whats good for the goose, is good for the gander..

I just say "I can eat anything as long as I take the dose to match it." And that's pretty easy for people to understand.

Haven't faced the question in a while though.

I have friends that want to send me healthy recipes, usually something that I can't eat, like with rice. Then when I tell them I can't have rice much (seldom ever), they are always so surprised "because Chinese people are so healthy, and they eat it all the time." Then they will ask me if I am sure I can't have "this or that". Duh, I have only been dealing with this for a lifetime, I am so glad you decided to educate me. Of course I don't say that, I just say Thanks for the recipe and let it go...well, until someone asks me how I liked the recipe I didn't try.:embarasse

Depends on the person. If it's someone I like, I'll be surprised they brought it up but I'll elaborate and remind them I'm on a regime that lets me eat and do what I like. If it's someone I don't like, I simply say, "I've had diabetes for 8 years. Do you really think you know what I can and can't do better than I do? Are you a doctor? No, you f***ing aren't."

Oh! Deus! I'm shocked! You wouldn't swear at an innocent food nazi would you?!

It's much more satisfying to punch them...Lol

The running joke at my office seems to be "Becky, crank that thing up to stun- we're having donuts at today's meeting!" My co-workers all know that I use a pump and have gotten over most of their food nazi ways. When they don't, I remind them that they sound like my grandmother and that usually puts an end to it. Truthfully, I think the T2 ones are jealous that I can have have a donut and still have a normal BG 2-3 hours later.

I also hear that comment from time to time. I usually just point to my pump and say "that's what this is for".

I still can't get my wife to shake that old way of thinking. I tell her I can eat what I want, I just have to make sure I take enough insulin to counter it. She insists I am wrong, and that my educator should not lead me to believe that.

when i tell people i am a diabetic i have had many people look at me and then say "but your not fat" I hate that!!!

I always tell people that there are 2 different types of diabetes, and not all type 2's are "fat" i can sit for hours and educate people on my disease...i think this is why i am a health educator hahaha

I say something along the lines of "no, I was going to look at some, and then offer it to you!"

And when they look at me I tell them I can eat whenever they can.

My guess: the more you've educated those around you to say "crank that thing up to stun," the less you're going to get annoying questions. Plus, it has to make you to smile when they say it, doesn't it?

Anyone foolish enough to offer me jam-filled, sugar-coated doughnuts can expect them to get eaten! YUMMY!

Of course, there is likely to be a significant dose of Novorapid taken to go with them.

Please note the use plurals. Offering me one is unwise, I need balance and balance with only one is extremely difficult. :D:D:D

Perhaps your wife needs to see the educator and get "educated."

If it any of the label contains

High Fructose Corn Syrup

Aspartame

Splenda

Diet anything I stay far away from it like it is rat poison.

I like natural stuff now pure organic sugar (Unbleached)

Coconut Oil to do my frying and baking

Real Sea Salt Natural

May 20th 2006 I had such bad lipid panel that I vowed to do the right thing. With some pretty amaizing results.

I use to get that a lot when I was a lot younger and it mostly came from older adults. I am rarely ever questioned about having things that are sweet. If someone offers me something sugary it never bothers me b/c it means to me that I am not just a "diabetic" to them, I am a normal person. I think the only time I am bothered is when I am at functions and there is nothing for me to drink. There is every type of sugar soda and sugared tea but no diet . No biggie, I just get water but it would be nice to have diet. I will often just bring my own drinks so I have something I like.

Can I? yes.
Should I? probably not but then neither should anyone else eat junk food

an answer that works for most foods that trigger the "can you eat that?" question.
