I have ordered my first pump today! (oooh that sounds like it should be made by Fisher Price doesn't it? My First Pump).

I am getting a clear Minimed 522. Hooray!

Now I just need to book into the endo to get hooked up when it arrives.

Welcome to the club! I still remember the day my pump arrived, in 1996. and my first night (the only night I was stressed to be on it). My pump gave me back a nearly normal life and lifestyle. I hope you find it as worthwhile. Most of us do.

Congrats. I have been hooked up to my 522 for a week and a half so far. Some minor adjustments and some ups and downs but overall I have been very pleased with it. I was on MDI for 32 years and finally made the switch. Good luck with it.

Good luck - like most of us, you'll be glad you're pumping and never look back! One thing to watch, however, is the BD glucometer that comes with your pump - many of us have experienced erratic readings with it. I use my onetouch and enter my BG for a bolus. I only use the BD to download my pump data to the MM website to make my charts (I then e-mail the charts to my DE for us to discuss when needed). Just be careful if your BD reading doesn't follow how you're feeling - double check it with your old meter.

Funny you should put the link about the skins up - I just got a brochure on them today!

Ok so one more sleep until the pump arrives! Yep as Spike has said many times it is just like waiting for Christmas.

I have pump training on Wednesday - so should be up and running next week.

When you get it play with it! Go through the online pump school with it. Play with the CD - both give real situations for you to play with. Even if you've already done these things pump-less, do them again. Wear it - I was surprised by its weight. Pull out everything and read everything. The spiral book that comes has lessons in it also.

I've been 4 months after 31 years. I found I had to unlearn much and learn to trust the pump. Beware the stacking.

OMG - it is here!

I just unpacked the box and looked at everything - it is all so exciting.

So I now have a beautiful little clear 522. It even came with the remote!

My endo must have decided on quick-sets (23in), so I will give them a go.

I just went and ordered a bunch-o-**** that i will probably never use - but hey I was excited! (supply travel case, sleep pouch, IV 3000s, and some of those patches from groovypatches.com).

Just have to wait until Wednesday for training now - but I have plenty to read and play with until then anyway.

Ok so here is a thought - i've seen lots of random suggestions and lists in different sites/books/manuals etc, but how about we create a checklist of things that (new) pumpers need. Especially the things that you discovered that people may not have been told about.

So far I have assembled in my d collection:

Pump & remote (and all the other stuff it came with)
Cases, holsters, clips, etc
Meters (am going to use my ultrasmarts as the primary ones, so i can ditch doing the manual record books)
batteries (lots)
Infusion sets, reservoirs, and inserter
syringes and back-up insulin (novorapid flexpens/protophane penfill + novopen [what i am currently on]) just in case i need to go off it at some point
iv prep wipes, iv 3000, tape
glucose tablets (aaargh they are disgusting - but you sure don't overtreat with them and no-one else steals them)
A Copy of Pumping Insulin & the ADA Calorie Guide thing
Groovy new scales that tell you the carb, fat, GI etc
Glucagon Hypo Kit
Ketone testing supplies

what else?
And any name suggestions?

Two things off the top of my head:

HOW did you manage to get a remote included with your 522? My wife and I just got 522's and no remote. It's an extra cost option.

Do NOT use Duracells in your pump. IF you do, you will think your pump is defective, after less than a week. You must use Energizers. There's something in the circuitry that doesn't "like" Duracells and the pump will stop without warning after less than 6 days.

I'm kinda wondering about that remote thing myself. Those are not usually a freebie. They run for around $150.

Jade,

I just started using my 722 a few days ago (its been sitting in my house for almost a month waiting for the training). You'll love it. It'll actually be weird when you go through your first day with no syringe sticks!

Thanks for the tip about the energizers - luckily that is what I just bought a huge pack of.

RE: the remote - not sure why - but it listed on the shipping list, so it wasn't an accident. Pleasant surprise though as I was going to buy one later.

It is funny, but in Aus it comes with it (the remote) instead of the BD Monitor - I can only think that perhaps they are including it now to sweeten the pack now that the BD Link is effectively discontinued. Still received the BD link as well though.

The box it got had it in: the pump box (which included the belt clip, holster etc), the info pack, bd monitor and cable, cd rom, iv prep wipes, remote, quick serter, 4 boxes of quick sets and 4 boxes of reservoirs.

thanks for the explanation. no meter, so they include the remote. makes sense.

That is definately a sweet deal! I would have MUCH rather had the remote than the bd meter.....Have fun with your new toys!
