Does 1.5 still produce some insulin ?

My endo says no, but from what I read on here I get the impression that there's more than one kind of 1.5....
I was told I had LADA...basically meaning I waited until adulthood to get type 1. I haven't produced enough insulin worth measuring in at least 4 years.

LADA makes some insulin at first, then it gradually dies down in the 6-10 years following diagnosis. Then it's plain old type 1 with no insulin. The term 1.5 means in essence that insulin production is still present. It's type 1 when there is no insulin production and evidence of immune destruction.

Short answer is yes, for some.

Since beta cells may be replaced by stem cells from the spleen it is possible that a type 1 or 1.5 may have some insulin production in fits and spurts. One type 1 member we have not seen for awhile by the handle of Alaska reported that he would have to stop taking insulin on occasion for a week or two. Like FG said a 1.5 may have a ridiculously long honeymoon.

Yes, no question - I am officially T1/LADA for 2 1/2 years now, diagnosis based on GAD antibody tests, but not yet using insulin (but every time I see the Dr I expect to be told "now's the time..."). Last A1c was 6.5%. Next checkup is in three weeks. I've managed to keep the beta cells going by low-carbing, some exercise (not sure whether it's had any real efect on bs, but it makes me feel better!) and 3x500mg metformin.

Thre is a whole sliding scale of LADA's. Some have so few anti GAD anti-bodies that they can regenerate beta cells as fast as they are destroyed and never actually have symptoms. At the other end of the scale is the classic type 1 who can loose all there beta cells in a few days.

I read in Pumping Insulin that 98% of type 1s will require insulin shots within 6 years of diagnosis, so that's not entirely uncommon.

I was the opposite...never not on insulin.

I am a 1.5 who makes some insulin, actually a quite a bit. I still need some exogenous insulin however. I low carb, run A LOT, and keep my weight down and my endo thinks that by doing all this I could keep my control good for years.

I not really sure, I just had a c peptide drawn two thursdays ago, and according to my endo it's still almost normal, A wee bit low, but mostly ok. So she says that with as active as I am and so thin she just can't catagorize me me as a type 2. Also when I was initially diagnosed we did a run of glucopage that made no difference in my sugars.
