View Full Version : Refurbished pumps.... go or not go?

I have finally gathered some good and vivid reasons for going pumping...
My next problem is should I persue a refurbished pump for lower price or should I go ahead, buy a new pump and pay big bulks upfront? (Remember, I don't have insurance to cover for me)
I got an offer from Metronics recently that a "recertified" 508R with 4months of infusion set supplies and warranty down to 2 years, costs USD 2.5k. Recertification due to a refurbished driver arm in the pump while everything else is new.
Any comments, suggestions or experience to share?

As long as it has the warranty I would go for it. Check out what deals Animas and Cozmo have too. The 508 is rather outdated, but a great pump none the less.

Think about it this way. A new pump is a mass produced product. A mass produced item is going to have a failure rate. A refurb has been gone over by a human with a fined tooth comb. I wouldn't hesitate at a refurb. I had a refurb replacement pump when my NEW one failed. It worked perfectly for three years until I replaced it with a "new" one.
I pumped for four years on my 508...with two 508s. My brand new one "wigged out" one day and wouldn't allow inputs (after two years of use). The basal rate remained, but any attempt to touch a key literally made the interface freak out. MM sent me a refurbished pump that lasted me at least as long and as far as I know, may still be pumping today.
As long as there is a warranty, I think it's worth it in many ways.

MM refurbs are provided to users when their pumps are replaced under warranty. They look identical to new pumps and should work well. Having said that, I've had numerous pumps fail during the last 10 years of pumping.

I still have a case, yes, full case of supplies for the 508 laying around at my house.
I have not run into anyone around this area that could use them.
Any takers? Price is right. Free of course.

I may need it if I decide to go along with the refurb 508 (very inclined since my new Endo is so MM friendly)
What is in the "case of supplies"? Infusion set (Sof/Sil-set ultimate) and Reservoirs (3ml)? How many of them?

I thought about this a little more, and realized that cozmo sells pumps to uninsured people for like $5 (I think). So for twice as much money, you could get a new pump with way more features and double the warranty. If you are planning on being without insurance for awhile, the 4 year warranty would be a good thing.

I am not even sure if Animas has distributors in Singapore. For MM, the latest model available there is only 512/712. So I don't hold high hopes for Animas presence there since it is a relatively new pump company ... Thanks for your thought anyway, Funnygrl :)

I was talking about cozmo, which is pretty international. I didn't realize you were in singapore though.

O.M.G... What's wrong with me? I have been so occupied by so many good comments 'bout Animas that I kept thinking about it. I will keep a lookout for Cozmo...
Well, I am now in Shanghai but am from Singapore. So I need to find one pump that is being supported in these 2 locations. That is just me!!:bebored:

A ninety day supply of res & infusion sets, that should be about 30 sets of each. I think they are soft sets? Same stuff I have been using for years. I was on an auto plan to ship supplies and it got away from me. Ended up with four cases of supplies. I think MM has a hard time counting the days. Anyway I switched to the Paradigm and have held this last case ever since. No one around here seems to use the older 508 any longer.
I will check the box tonight and post the exact Infusion set in there.
Have never mailed anything to Shanghai. Wonder what that will involve.

I also have some supplies that I will probably give away to someone. I know I have resevoirs that I can no longer use, also have soft set ultimate QRs, but have been told I could still use them with the Animas, so not sure if I want to try them or keep using the ones Animas sent. These quick sets seem to stick a lot better on me, but maybe that is because it isn't summer and hot outside. Still deciding on the sets. If anyone might be interested, you can let me know and I will contact you when I decide. Had a 508, but now have the Animas.
