I read on the Animas website that you can "enter up to 9 foods and the pump will add the carbs." Or something to that effect. Will it only do that if you use the carb database, or can you enter carbs manually for various foods and have it add up too?

On Cozmo you can just hit the touch bolus button when programming a meal bolus and enter carb counts individually, and I'm wondering if it's the same.

You can add carbs either way.
Check out their online demo pump.
Animas Corporation - IR 1250 VIRTUAL PUMP (http://www.animascorp.com/vpir1250/vpm.shtml)

You must enable carbsmart under setup/advanced/advanced bolus.

Not fair, we dont have the carb counter or database on our 1200s. Do you ever feel like you are missing out on something - me, all the time. I'm not paranoid, I just wish that people would stop picking on me.

I used the demo, I got it to add the carbs from the food database, plus carbs I manually entered, but I couldn't get it to add individually entered foods.

I guess you need to bolus multiple times... It is lame that you can't add up a meal by selecting multiple food items from the database. Technology is way beyond what the pumps currently support, IMO.

You can add up the meal by selecting multiple items from the food database, but I like what the cozmo does of letting you program multiple carb amounts sans database, and wondered if the animas has this.

Yeah, you can add several items from the food database and the pump will total it up. I've used it a few times for fast food meals. What do you mean by "letting you program multiple carb amounts"? If you count carbs yourself, you can enter them and it will tell you how much insulin to bolus based on your I:C ratio (but I'm guessing you already knew that :D).

I wish the food database supplied the protein and perhaps the fat content also...

protein and perhaps the fat content also
There are two work arounds that In am aware of for that.

The easy way is the software provided for a palm.
Has food db containing protein, fat, fiber and makes insulin siggestions "ezmanager+"
Dont think it can be interfaced to control the pump but they both have ir so possibile future???

The second way is that the food db is completely customizable.
So for example you know that protein has 20& effect on carbs and fat has 50%. You just change it or add it in the food database.

Heres an example.
chicken
1oz
8 fat = 4 equiv carbs
4 protein = 0.8 equiv carbs
You make an entry for chicken as having 4.8 carbs per 1 oz and save it to the pump.

Heres another possibility
save the protein and fat as servings.
Then it will list them in the pump.

Going even further into the fat and protein thing you can program fat and protein as food items and just copy them from the food label into the pump.

If protein has a 20% effect on you enter 1 gram of protein = 0.2 carb.
same for fat.
Then you can just enter the info right from a foods label.
Then you just have to figure out the bolus type and duration you need.

On Cozmo, you can go and do something like this:

Item 1: 20 grams
Item 2: 34 grams
Item 3: 19 grams
Item 4: 3 grams

And it will add them up. It's nice if I eat prepacked foods and feel lazy.

You can do that.
Just bolus for each item.
Add the bg only to the first item.

On correction to my above post the food db does show protein and fat.
Check out for example canad bacon.
