whats the pros and cons of both. my bf has a 'normal' dr and I was told an Euncologist was better. I know one specializes in diabetes but is his regular dr ok?, or as educated?:dontknow:

Hi Gigs and Welcome to The Forums. :wavey:
Do you mean an Oncologist? They specialize in cancers not Diabetes.
No, a "normal" Dr. is not adequate for a Patient with Diabetes. Unless
he is Very knowledgeable about Diabetes or goes out of his way to do
research into Diabetes(for his Patients) plus asking his colleagues or
Endo Friends, any questions he needs answered. Most GP's aren't very
knowledgeable since Diabetes is very complicated and it's only one disease.
Simple enough, ask your b/f to ask his Dr. if he is knowledgeable about Diabetes.
An Endocrinologist(Endo) specializes in Diabetes and other gland diseases.
He's the one you'd want to be seeing. Good Luck. :)

Yes an Endo is what I was talking about.Wasn't sure about the spelling..thanks.
Any suggestions on how to convince him he should switch? I have mentioned this to him many times and he just says he likes his dr and what the difference...? So maybe you could give me specifics on why an endo is better..
Thanks

An endo is specialized in diabetes care. They are more up to date on the latest treatments. My CDE at my primary docs office is trying to get me in to see the best one in my area. I need more help.

Dave, do what you gotta do to prolong your health. We love our members here and we all will help where we can.
My current treatment plan is still working, just not well enough. That's where the endo comes in to the picture.

Hello...
I have both a primary and an ENDO. He doesnt have to leave his regular doctor, just search for an Endo.

Hi griggs
An endocrinologist is specialized and more up to date on the latest treatments and such.
In some ways, it's good to have both. For Diabetes though, it's best to have a doctor who's familiar with the varying aspects of it and other areas (such as Thyroid health, etc.).
