So yesterday I did a site change, did my usual breakfast and went to my new endo. While there we discussed some weird things with blood work and some other symptoms I had been having. He feels I have Celiac disease and told me to avoid gluten AND lactos. Other than that I am really healthy blah blah. So i get to work and check my bs. I was high! I wasn't sure if it was stress so I took a 1/2 bolus and went to the gym at lunch. After the gym i was just as high! So now I bolus again and an hour later still high. At this point I am not sure if it is the new site or stress. By the time i got home all the insulin FINALLY caught up with me and I was low. Then normal until bed and woke up 275. I decided it may have been a site issue and changed the site. It took mulitple boluses to get my bs to budge from 275 to 150 5 hours!! So I went home and started a new bottle of insulin. I seem to be ok now/a little lower than normal. Does this sound like an insulin issue or site issue? The insulin was started on 10/20.

You may have had several issues going on yesterday. When you are above 200 it is not a good idea to do a workout. You may have been stressed from your doctor visit and your site may have needed changing. When you are high or VERY high it is advisable to do a bolus by needle. You can get your blood sugar down, know that you are getting the insulin you need (vs wondering about bad site). If you blood sugar still does not go down with injection then you should open a new bottle and use the needle again.

I was told by a CDE I learned to trust that a workout with hi bg's will not only damage tissue, but can push the bg's higher. Remember there are a lot of other things going on besides insulin in our bloodstreams.

I know that your not suppose to work out with high bloodsugar. However with my 23 years of having diabetes and working out while high it has consistantly lowered my bs, never once keeping it high or delaying the reaction time of the insulin....Has anyone had working out while high have it delay their insulin reaction time by 5 hours? I was under the impression it was done working in 4 hours.

Personally poper I think it was more than one issue. I am glad you have never had problems working out with high blood sugar. I have and it has delayed lowering my blood sugar, but not by five hours. I think there was more than one thing going on with you.

When your bg goes up that high, your insulin resistence is probably increasing. Thus, your normal correction boluses won't work and the ISF needs to be decreased...

In reference to the drs comments about coeliac (sorry I spell it the correct way - what is it with american spelling and leaving out some of the vowels in words? And don't get me started on 'S' vs 'Z' Just teasing:) )

While blood tests can show the antibodies that can indicate coeliac, they ONLY way to actually diagnose it is to have a small bowel biospywhere they look for damage to the villi caused by coeliac disease (it is just a endoscopy under sedation - nothing major). This is what I had done and sure enough I had it.

The recommendation to stay away from gluten and lactose are fine if you have had the biopsy, but you shouldn't do it if it hasn't been done. The reason for this is simple - if you need to have the biospy and you have been having a gf lf diet - your test will be all screwed up!

I'd ask your doc about this or even ask for a referral to a gastro.

Slightly off topic - and not directed at your post at all:

I have noticed on a few GF websites that people seem to be self-diagnosing Coeliac when they merely may be sensitive to wheat or have irritable bowl syndrome. And it also appears to be a trendy diet thing at the moment which annoys me so much - as I would love to have the 'option' of not having the GF diet (especially combined with Type 1 Diabetes).

Yes, it started happening to me with about 18 years of type 1 gone by. Don't have a clue as to why that changed. It is possible of course that I had not noticed it, but I don't recall experiencing this until a few back. Now it happens nearly evertime. Tought to handle. Bolus and then go for a run? Not too smart.

I may be wrong, but I believe it's ok to exercise with high blood sugar (over 200) as long as you do not have ketones. I think if you have ketones and hi bs, any exercise you do will be interpreted as stress by your body and will push your blood sugar higher. But if you don't have ketones, it's ok to workout. Personally, I don't let it stop me from working out- I usually like to start out over 200 when I exercise anyway, b/c I tend to drop pretty drasticaly .

To expand on that. The real villain of the piece is low insulin, which is consistent with ketones in the urine. But you can have low insulin (for a while) without ketones too. A lack of insulin increases glucagon, which opens the liver's glucose floodgates and BG goes through the roof. This used to happen to me when I used to inject Lantus in the morning and go to the gym before breakfast. :secruity:
