Question - my bsl was 9.1mmol/l (163) this morning -usually I'm under 6 in the morning. I've tested again (before lunch) and got 12.9mmol/l (232).

I'm starting to get a cold and was wondering if that can cause bsl to increase?

I can't think of anything else. I had the usual for breakfast coffee (2 leveled teaspoons of sugar) + toast with low joule jam. I also had 1/2 glass of lemonade just over an hour ago...

:questionm

Yes, being sick can make your blood sugars go all whacky! I'd just keep a watch on it, and eat as carefully as you can! ;)

A cold or any illness can make most people's numbers shoot up a bit for a while.

Lemonade, sugar in coffee, toast with jam... WOW... those alone woulda shot me up MILES! But I assume you're used to eating/drinking those things and don't normally get that kind of response?

Hey thanks...

Still up... my bsl = 15.2mmol/l (273)… 2 ½ hrs after lunch (tested because I can’t stop going to the toilet)

I ate the same for lunch... but sandwich instead of toast, no coffee, just water with lemon juice in it.

The jam okay i think, there is 3g /per serving in the jam I eat (it's weight watchers) . At least the dietician I saw last week said it was alright for me to have it on my toast, sandwiches etc..

I think coffee increases my bsl a little. When I was in hosp last week + the only time my bsl increased was when I had coffee w/equal – I wasn’t allowed to have sugar.

Yep a lot of people get that - coffee stimulates adrenalin (sp?) and somehow increases the blood sugar. Don't remember the details, but that's roughly the guts of it! Some people seem to get away with it. Personally, I have 3 - 5 WEAK black coffees a day, so it's not a problem.

That Jam sounds good, but the bread itself is still going to push your numbers up.

With such high numbers at the moment you might want to consider going easy on the carbs... that tiny amount of Lantus isn't going to cover you for meals, especially while your numbers are 'wobbly'.

I didn't know that (about the coffee).

Does tea have the same effect?

My bsl haven't been too bad since... actually dropped to 11.4 before dinner (hadn't eaten anything since lunch).

They're up again (1hr 1/2) after dinner, but only 16.2mmol/l (291). I know the meter isn't 'lying' b/c I double checked the keto-diastix the glucose strip turned dark brown straight away- got ketones, but I've spilt ketones in the past when I've been sick (and didn'thave diabetes).

Thanks.

Make sure you drink plenty of water to keep hydrated. At the same time, keep the bg down with correction boluses if possible.

It could just be a simple thing like you are coming out of your honeymoon period + the cold won't help.
But you are also your own worst enemy drinking lemonade if it's not sugar free is only for treating hypo's and rotting your teeth as is sugar in coffee.

Caught a cold about three weeks ago. It was on a Sunday when the symptoms showed up. Did not do any metering on the weekend, but Monday my bg's were consistantly running about 30 points higher. This lasted for 3 or 4 days then my post meals came down to near normal, but my fasting checks were still elevated. Still somewhat congested and my wake up readings are running 10 to 20 points higher than the week before catching the cold.
