Hey guys, I have yet another question.
My basal rate changes a lot during the day... 10 times to be exact. I'm wondering if that is a lot...? I know everyone is different and I'm not asking what others do... I'm just concerned because my control has - er - turned rather crappy latley and I'm not too sure what to do.
I did a series of bgls without eating, and I was surprised to find they were quite high (all above 13mmol) so I'm guessing that my bgls are being kept low by my boluses rather than basal rate. Once I eat and bolus my bgls are fine again...
Ok I'm confused as, any help would be great... :) Thanks.

When I started They set me at 1 rate. I tested A LOT!!! Learned my way around foods and how to correctly cover with my ratio. I was still having dawn phenomenon and thats were I had to have a different setting.
I believe testing a lot can really help and it does take some time to really get you stable.
Have you gotten the Bolus coverage right ?

Cinnabon,
Yeah I did heaps of testing when i first started too... Looks like I'll have to do it again! Talk about frustrating! You know you're a diabetic when you're fingers don't bleed any more...! Thanks :)

Oh IO know....
I also know how frustrating it is to start. I also remember eating something specific, with the exact number of carbs, exactly to my ratio, depending on my BG at the time, I would bolus.
I would test like this. Its work but well worth it at the end.

You could go through your basal profile and kick up the numbers a notch or two. I do this sometimes to adjust my entire basal profile or a period of several basals.

I got the name of this book from this sight and it has been invaluable in getting my 9 year-old in better control. It gives tells you step by step how to perform basal rate tests, how to change your basals based on the results, how to check your correctin factor,...Everything you need to know if you or your loved one is pumping. Can't say enough good things about this book!!!!!!!
Another suggestion for setting up basal/bolus is to go on a Continues Blood
Glucose Monitor for a few days and look at the data.
I am not talking about the retail version that cost from several hundred
dollars up to a $1000 to start. I'm talking about the doctor's version, also
made by Minimed, where you buy the sensor (not covered, so cost us $40)
and the clinic would give you the monitor to connect to the sensor. You
wear it for several days while keeping a log and entering BG numbers,
Insulin intake, exercise and low BG events. After you done, you bring it
back to the office were they can download the results and give you copy
(you do not have access to the data while you are wearing the system).
We are currently doing that to see what is going on with my daughter's
midnight highs and dinner time lows.

egi - I would love to do this, however it is not avaliable in New Zealand (at least where I live anyways). I think I'll just be sticking to the fasting bgls! i've done a few series so far... not looking too bad... :)
