Last night I got home really late and didn't even want to think abut making food. I stopped at the Chinese take out in my neighborhood, for the first time since I started pumping. I did actually have it once last year at my sister's and it was a disaster...

I got an order of moo shu chicken, and a small order of broccoli in garlic sauce with brown rice. I was so hungry I ate 1/2 the moo shu chicken and all of the pancakes/wrappers (5 of them). I ate half of the broccoli (in very greasy sauce) and 1/2 cup of brown rice.

I had a hard time deciding how to count the carbs. I found a listing online for moo shu chicken with 2 pancakes, but it didn't indicate exactly what a "serving" was. I ended up counting 137 carbs, but part of that was taking the fat and protein into account. I bolused 7 units, 4 normal and 3 over 6 hours. My BGs were great all night. I woke up early, around 6:30am and checked my BG - 147, a little high but nothing I couldn't live with.

One day I'll be really brave and try my absolute favorite, sweet & sour chicken. I know it will be trickier than moo shu pork & broccoli in garlic sauce.

I've tried Indian twice (or 3 times?) now and still haven't gotten that one yet. I came close one time but didn't run the square wave bolus long enough. Guess I'll just have to experiment some more!

Hmm, I had Indian tonight and am scared to test.. It was good though!

ETA: Hmm, just tested, I had good reason to be afraid. Gah.

Thanks, Poodlebone! You are giving me courage to try it some more. I LOVE Chinese food. Maybe I am just not running that square wave long enough and after 6 months, I still tend to count carbs low. I don't eat many very often and haven't had much practice! Let us all know if you tackle sweet and sour! Mich

With Indian food, I'd have good readings at 2 hours and then they'd start creeping up but still not bad. It was 4-5 hours later that I had to worry about. I was probably only doing the square portion for 2 or 3 hours.

With high fat food I have become aggressive in putting a high enough carb count into my pump. I really had to guess with the moo shu pork and the garlic sauce because I couldn't find nutrition info for them, or at least nutrition info with serving sizes.

For Chinese I will definitely use the 6 hour square portion again. That seemed to work out well. It will be awhile before I try the sweet & sour chicken. Not only is the stuff breaded & deep fried, but then there's that lovely toxic, sweet sauce all over it. I love that stuff and totally drown the rice in it.

Have you ever tried making sweet and sour sauce at home with Splenda? I've thought about it. Hmmmm. I've had chinese food a couple times and usually take a huge blast to cover it. Those are the nights (not often) that I set my alarm for the middle of the night to check my bg. I wish it was a simple calculation that we could all follow!

I don't have much of a problem with Chinese food as long as I take it easy on the rice. I don't like the sweet and sour stuff tho......but love the seafood and fish stuff and generally make a pig out my self on it.

Mexican is what gives me trouble and living in Texas, Mexican food is a way of life.
