Hi all,

Having some problems. Just dx'd a week ago and am still very new to this.

tested myself an hour ago (two hours after breakfeast) and showed a 103. Now all of a sudden I have gotten really shaky (like REAL bad caffine nerves), and feeling wierd. Checked bg and am now at 64. My bg had been REAL high before dx'd and is slowly coming down. Maybe it's just my body readjusting to a normal bg, I'm not really sure, what do yo think?

Sorry, I hope this makes sense as I'm not thinking too clearly ust now.

Hi gunner.
64 is considered a hypoglycemic event, as is anything under 70. Thus, you will feel shaky (a situation I like to refer to as "spaghetti limbs" lol), blank in the head, your palms may get sweaty, etc etc.

Have you been advised on the 15 min/15g carb rule for hypo's?

First of all, get some sugar in yourself.

Second, feeling shakey and such is normal symptoms of low b/s, so you're normal. If you find this happening in a pattern, then you should re-measure your carb to ins ratio or lower your long-acting insulin a bit.

Shy's right, anything under 70 is low.

I am taking 5/500 (x2 twice a day) Glucovance, oral.

You bet!

Treat a hypo with 15 g of carbs, such as three 5 g tablets of glucose, some juice (it will tell you on the juice box how much is the equivalent of 15g - usually 1/2 cup I think), hard candy such as lifesavers, etc.
After 15 minutes, check your BG again, and if you are still hypo, take another 15 g of carbs and repeat the 15 minute test.

Thanks for all the replys. I ate some lunch and am feeling much better now.
Wow, that hit me like a ton of bricks. I was feeling fine when all of a sudden my hands were shaking something fierce and I started feeling really wierd. Checked my bg and it is 81. That's is pretty low for me but I'll keep an eye on it.

Cheers,
Craig

I try to keep some instant glucose in my pocket, just in case it's needed. Do you have anything like that? The type I like is no longer manufactured but there are other products you can buy at drug stores.

I've just been doing this for a week so I haven't been aware of anything special for a hypoglycemic condition. I did get a regular coke to keep in my cube (work) and a roll of LifeSavers for my pocket, just in case.

gunner,

other possibilities:

1. rolls of glucose tablets that can be obtained at Wal-Mart, K-Mart, any of the chains in that part of the country--I bought two rolls and then get containers of different flavored refills

2. Pkgs of peanutbutter crackers, I keep them at work and in the car. They're easy to obtain and easy to carry around. I like them cause they boost your B/G plus add protein and slow down absorption so that you're not on a roller-coaster

for me, juicesor pop bring me up very quick but then I go down just as quick so I like stuff that evens out it's effect
