I haven't yet found anyone who does, fast acting humalog for meals and also takes nph, like in the morning and then in the evening. Is there anyone who does this? and if so how much?

I do, sort of. I take Humalog at each meal and have been taking NPH for many years at about 10:00 in the evening. I recently started taking the NPH in the evening and another injection at lunch to see if that would help lower problems with insulin shock at night and high blood sugar around 10:00 p.m. I'm currently taking 10 units of NPH at 10:00 p.m. and 10 around 11:00 a.m.

For many years (too young to remember) I was on NPH and R. The theory applies the same as with NPH and Humalog/Novolog/Apidra. You just ahve to watch how you give that insulin at lunch and with a bedtime snack because of the peaks NPH has. That is what makes it difficult since you will have different needs for insulin based on time after taking the NPH. Most have switched to Lantus, but some still use that method. I for one hated NPH so was glad to be off of it when I started pumping.

Hey andypoo, My son takes a combo of nph/novolog morning and dinner time with a sliding scale of novolog if necessary at lunch. We also do some carb counting and adjust the novolog accordingly.

I was on NPH + R for 11 years, then Humalog + NPH. I was on that up until March of last year, when I was switched to Lantus and then a pump. I couldn't believe the difference between Lantus and NPH. Then I got my pump, and couldn't believe the difference between that and Lantus.
My biggest nightmare is losing my health insurance and having to go back to NPH (and R).

I used to use Humulin I (Is that the same as NPH?) and humolog before lantus and ultimately Levimer came on the market. Although it did not offer the same level of flexibility that is now possible with analogue basle insulins, there was still room for some dose adjustments for normality if you know how to carb count and test etc.

I honestly stopped using NPH about seven years ago and never looked back. The peaks and valleys of NPH and REG insulins were always a mystery I could not conquer. I gave up and switched to Humalog and Lantus and eventually the pump. Much easier for me.
