What exactly is Type 1.5? When I was diagnosed 16 months ago, my doc only told me about type 1, type 2 and gestational.

On this forum, it refers to LADA. Sometimes people call double diabetes (Type 1 with heavy insulin resistance) 1.5, and some people call MODY 1.5. Confused yet? ;) For insurance purposes (where there are only two types of diabetes), LADA is Type 1. It's an autoimmune disease just like regular Type 1.

Diabetes Monitor - LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults) (http://www.diabetesmonitor.com/lada.htm)

Here's more about MODY if you want to know:
MODY - It's Not Type 1 and Not Type 2, but Something New (http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14047009.php)

Interesting - thank you - I've got some reading to do! I wonder if I'm actually a Type 1.5 since I was diagnosed at 35. Hmmmmmm.

I was misdiagnosed as a type 2 at about 32, then correctly diagnosed as type 1.5 about 5 years later.

Want more confusion? I was dx'ed incorrectly as type 2 at age 32. Dx'ed as type 1 a year later. Dx changed to 1.5 this summer. Just this week I was told that it was really type 1, and not 1.5 at all. Go figure.

They have no clue what type I have, so they label ne whatever the diagnosis of the day is, and treat me like a type 1.

Well, you can also get Type 1 at any age. The difference is the length of the onset. The onset for Type 1 is very fast and insulin production decreases rapidly until becoming absent (or virtually absent). With LADA, it decreases more slowly and can take 6-8 years to become absent, so people have an easier time controlling their blood sugar and don't have to take as much insulin until that happens.

I was diagnosed at age sixteen ..... ,37 years ago. I have often asked my dr. if she thought I could also , (after yrs. of having this) be insulin resistant. That is one of the reasons I was going to take symlin.I'm not going to now.I don't want another drug that's going to cause any more discomfort such as nausea, and possibly interfere with all the other meds I take. I asked my dr. about taking humalog before each meal and also take my nph. I'm experimenting with myself and I'm actually getting better bs readings 88,122,116's. Now, at night I take about 40u, of nph ,and I do have a snack, but my mornings are still high. What do you folks out there snack on in the evening? and do you also take insulin with that? I'm still trying to come to a perfect mix that works for me. I'll be seeing the dr. in a few weeks.

Ya know - sometimes I feel so frustrated with the huge amount of info and all of the variables that can mix things up! After reading Lilituc's post, I would say that I'm definately a Type 1 then because it came on so fast. It's kind of ironic too because when I was diagnosed, I was at the healthiest time of my adult life! 7 months earlier, I had successfully lost 45 lbs. with the help of Weight Watchers and my beloved treadmill. I was exercising every day, eating really healthy, not drinking, and then BAM. Type 1. It actually makes me laugh!:hahaha:
