I posted a few days ago about rising BG in the morning. I learned about the Dawn Phenomenon and quicly realized that is exactly what is happening to me. So, I started increasing my basal between 4 and 8 am and my BG is getting worse!?!?

It was around 6.4-6.8 and now I'm at 7.2-7.5!?!?

Any thoughts? This is so frustrating.

What is your basal profile?

One thing could be now you are going low in the middle of the night. You may have increased it enough to drop you low. Then your liver is kicking in and is dumping glucose into the blood stream to correct it. The problem is, the liver is stupid when it does this and it just dumps and undetermined amount. It says hey, a low can kill me, at least a high won't, so I'll just dump away. Maybe you should wake in the middle of the night and see what you are running then.

Jedi is correct, you do need to verify your evening basals first by waking up at certain times during the night and checking your bg. It is a process (http://www.insulin-pumpers.org/howto/baslr.html) that will take a couple days.

I spoke to my nurse and she suggested the same. I will be waking at 3 am and 5 am this weekend. Great. I thought I might get some sleep after a crazy work-week. Maybe next weekend. ;)

Thanks for your input!

Your variance is extremely small, and the numbers are not really bad at all. I'd take those numbers in a heartbeat. There are a gazillion reasons for this. Your midnight to 5am may have to drop as the above experts have suggested, but consider any dietary changes you've made, any infections, stress, lifestyle changes, etc. Good luck and go slowly.
