Hi all,
I have been using the Designer Whey Detour and One Way bars for occasional snacks. They offer 15 grams of protein and 13-14 grams of carbs. I have tried several, but these seem to have the best flavor without an aftertaste. I had been buying them by the case at Sam's Club, but I noticed this week that walmart carries them at a lower price. Oh well. . .
Now, my question: Does anyone else use protein bars? What brand or brands? How do they figure into your diabetes management? What impact do they have on your blood sugar?

P.S. There may be a quiz on some of this material, later. :)

tried a few but didn't like the taste so gave them up! Tried one from Sam's that had 12 in a bag sold in the bread section but haven't seen them around for a while. As for BG it did nothing to improve or destroy what I had just did the bolus and I was fine
AS for the QUIZ! Can I get my last 2 hours of graduate credit for it? If not then FORGET IT. One exam a week is all I Can handle!

Belinda,
I think I recall the energy bars you mentioned. They were a bread product with nuts, apples and raisins. They used to offer samples on those that had been tosted with a little butter. They were good, but waaaay too many carbs for me. Although, when toasted with butter they were very, very good.:)
As for the quiz, I will take the course credit idea under consideratioon.

Travis,
I have tried several different brands in the past, including Atkins, Pure Protein, EAS, etc. I always went for the verb low (net) carb bars, but found them generally lacking and a bit pricey.
Now I have completely switched over to a Whey protein powder, which is much tastier (in chocolate) and also more affordable per serving. A huge 77 serving container is about $36 if you use a GNC gold card at the beginning of the month. I have also seen the product a health food stores.
Though it is good when mixed with water, it is really best when prepared in the following way:
mix 4oz skim milk (or low carb skim milk), 4 oz. water, 3 ice cubes and 1 scoop of Optimum Nutrition Whey Power in blender. If you have one of those hand blenders, it is a piece of cake to prepare. (You can also shake it up in an airtight container or drink shaker, if a blender is not handy.)
Each serving has 110 calories, 23 g. protein and 3 g. carbs and 1.5 g. total fat. Add to this whatever you put in in terms of milk or milk substitute.
It's close to drinking a milkshake. Try it, you'll like it!

I used to think that protein bars might be a healthy food and have tried one or two in the past, but I have changed my opinion. This might not go for all the kinds out there, but when I look at the label and read ingredients, it seems that some are really no better than a candy bar. They have a lot of calories for the small size they are and a considerable amount of fat too. Plus, some of them come chocolate coated ( not that I am against that ;) ) which doesn't seem that healthy to me either. I guess a better snack choice would be a half a sandwich, or some nuts and fruit. I know that it isn't as exciting as a chocolate peanut butter protein bar, but it seems far healthier.

Statdeac,
Thanks. I had been wondering about the Whey powder. As a matter of fact, I was looking at a container yesterday in the grocery store. I may give it a try. The bars I use are made by Designer Whey and are very handy.
am1977,
I agree that real food is probably a better choice than any of the manufactured bars. I have done the sandwich and nuts routine. That is what drove me to the bars, I could only find so many ways to make a sandwich palatable. As for the similarity to candy bars, there is some. Maybe there is a little perverse thrill out of eating something that looks and tastes similar to a snickers.;)
