View Full Version : Can Anyone Shed Some Light.....

....on why my bloodsugar did this last night:

About 1.5 hours after dinner, I was 10 (180).
I ate nothing between dinner and bedtime.
At bedtime (a few hours later) I was 6 (108).
I ate a small piece of cheese - nothing else.
I also took my normal 6 units of Levemir
Around 2am I was 9 (162).
Didn't eat, didn't take insulin.
At 6am I was 7 (126).

Now why would I go up at night and then come back down? I would have expected to see DP kicking in. I haven't been waking up during the night much recently, so I don't know if this going up during the night and then coming back down thing is a regular occurrence.

I know I can't base too much on just one night of readings, and I know these readings aren't crazy-terrible, but I just find this quite curious.

Anyone have any ideas?

Answer me this: Is there a reason why you would expect your basal metabolism to be consistent all night long?

Okay, forget the rhetorical question.

You've realized the most important thing, that one night's worth of readings does not make a pattern. But keep in mind also that "basal metabolic rates" fluctuate throughout the day. My "basal pattern" in my pump changes frequently throughout the day. If I were on Lantus/Levemir, my options would be to let myself go high in the late mornings/late afternoons or go low during the other times of day because those insulins are constant and not flexible in how they provide their basal support. Your basal metabolism has to have some fluctuations as well, and it takes careful, repeated monitoring to unearth all that.

Yeah, I suppose. It's just that I've seen my Levemir keep me VERY stable for hours at a time. I guess there were just other factors in play last night. (E.g. I've been really stressed and that throws a monkey-wrench into things every time.)

Being stressed will affect your bs. If fact I think everything affects your bs. It's not easy trying to keep it right. At night time I reduce my basal by .2units for 4 hrs and then 1hr later I have to raise it by .4units for 2 hrs. Figure that.:mad: :mad: :mad: That's for now. Maybe next week I'll be something else.

Exercise? What's that? Is that something fit people do, not fat desk-jockies like me? I mean, if a gym fell on me, I wouldn't know what to do with it.

i remember being told that if you go on like a bike ride for miles (something you don't normally do)...exercise or stress levels....heck...just hormones can send us into the cellar or into orbit...we all know that.
stuff we don't normally do can affect us for days.

I hear you about the gym thing. I have the diet going, but the exercise could def be better!

Since we had our first kid, I have literally not been in a gym to work out...over three years now, and prior-to, I missed less than twelve scheduled workouts in 15 years. Having babies literally turned my life upside down!

I need to add (and I am knocking on wood) that my basal rates have been remarkably steady since I initially researched them. I have made only two adjustments in five years, and have been very stable otherwise. I don't know 100% that CGMS would back me up on that, but if I manage to go four hours without a meal bolus, I'll randomly test to get my bearings and then I'll test later when ready to eat, and I am very steady. I also don't seem to suffer from "liver dumps" for ANY reason. For all that, I am very thankful.

what did you have for dinner?

When i have pasta, i usually end up about 10 2 hours after, then drop, then by the time i go to bed and take my bedtime reading im higher back up to 10 again or sometimes higher...

I totally can't remember Stu, sorry. It was a few days ago now. This very likely could be what happened though.
